My wife and I (both Belgian citizens) are looking to spend a few months (maybe up to one year) in Thailand. We have sufficient financial means, we do not need to work and we do not intend to work in Thailand. I understand there is a non-immigrant O-A retirement visa, but that only applies to persons aged 50 or over. We are both 45 years old. Is there a way you can assist us in getting us a visa which would allow us stay for up to a year in Thailand without having to cross the border all the time? Thanks

From the Thai Embassy site:

Category "ED" To study, to come on a work study tour or observation tour, to participate in projects or seminars, to attend a conference or training course, to study as a foreign Buddhist monk.

Non-Immigrant Type ED

  • Transcript/Letter of acceptance from the concerned schools/universities or institutes
  • Official Note certifying the purpose of travel from the Government Agencies /Embassies and Consulates / International Organizations / State Enterprises inThailand. ("F" / "B" / "ED" / "M" / "R")

Does this mean I need to enroll in some kind of educational programme, or attend an official conference? Is there someone out there who has done this before and can supply some more information?

Thanks!

You can get a 3-entry tourist visas at the Thai embassy in Belgium which if properly manipulated can give you up to 9 months stay in Thailand -- if you want additional time you could probably get a one or two entry Tourist visas easy enough in a neighboring country. ED visa would seem to me to be unnecessary.

Border crossings would be involved but so would they for ED Visa.

We would like to spend a few months in Bangkok, then travel around Thailand for a while.

The ED visa would only be valid for one 90 day entry that you would then extend at immigration. You can make arrangements with a school by paying 50% of the tuition to get the paperwork for the visa before traveling.

The best way to do it is to get single entry tourist visas and check out several schools and decide which one you want to attend. Then with paperwork from the school go out for the non-ed visa at a nearby consulate or embassy.

Yeh ED not so good for travel around.

Triple entry tourist visa is option too. U stay 2 mo ths and extend locy for month then leave and come back repeat...

Thanks for that. Yeah, this sounds like a viable solution.
