New messenger/skype with focus on privacy

The headline is misleading. Tox is not even intended to be a "new Skype". It doesn't even plan to have phone numbers or offer calling to other hardphones, which is what Skype is all about and for which there appears to be no known alternative.

If I am wrong, please tell me, 'cos I would LOVE to ditch Skype which has become so annoying. But no other system offers the subscription charges of Skype or the ability to buy numbers in different countries.

There's a thousand ways to send messages if that's all you're into, but for actually making phone calls, we are stuck with Bill G's monolithic muck.

I will preface this with "I know very little about Skype especially the costs, and not too much about telephonic services in general"

That being said.

I use a nettalk adapter, which is a competitor to a magic jack. That gets me unlimited calls from my landline phone through my internet connection to any phone, land line, cell or other nettalk, in North America for a flat fee $30/year. Mexico and other countries can be added for additional charges.

I don't think you can buy numbers in other countries, so it already doesn't meet your criteria, but may fit others needs.

All the new startup's always come up with the same stuff, we are different we respect privacy blah blah blah then 6 months down the line you find out they are in bed with the NSA either by choice(threatend with shutdown) or forced( not allowed to tell customers).

In some form or another all the big boys are doing it skype, whatsapp, line etc it all boils down to the fact that if you have anyting to tell anybody that is remotley serious and not for others then dont use any internet messaging service use the old fasioned 'you coming for a walk' scenario.

Feels good to be "Free" dont it?

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated,..."

Thailand will need a new constitution soon, I wonder if they would like ours... since we're not using it.
