September 16, 201411 yr My wife had surgery for pancreatic cancer 17 years ago, her health has been declining for the last few years and I worry about the future, and she is currently in hospital with a possible bacterial infection in her bowel. This morning I went to get my visa extension stamp, and was told it hasn't arrived yet. While I was there I asked the Immigration officer what would happen to my visa if my wife passed away, she said I would have three options, 1. I could apply for a Non-O multi stay visa which would require me to go out and return every ninety days, 2. Apply for a tourist visa which would give me sixty days with thirty day extensions for one year, and 3. Apply for a retirement visa once I reach fifty years of age. I have seen another thread where the op stated that once your spouse dies you have to revert to a tourist visa, this concerned me, so I sort clarification. I hope this information is helpful.

September 16, 201411 yr Your extension will not immediately go away if your wife passes on. You will not have to do anything until your next extension is due. It seems you will have about a year from now before your next extension will be due since you recently applied or a new one. Unless you have children from your marriage your choices are limited.
