I only have one HDMI output on my TV but it has just broken due to the continuous plugging and unplugging of the HDMI cables. (I have an HDMI splitter, but the cable was faulty and I hadn't got round to buying a replacement)

It is a nightmare to take the TV down from its mountings and open up the TV and try to fix the HDMI outlet so I was wondering if there is such a thing as an HDMI to USB converter, preferably with 2 HDMI inputs as I have an USB input on the TV.

If so, are they available in Thailand?

Has anyone come across one?

Sorry to hear your HDMI port is broken. At one point, if I remember correctly, I think we tried to advise you to connect an HDMI extension cable on the TV then plug an unplug from it and not the TV (though it could have been another member). If you do take the TV in for repair, I would still recommend using an HDMI extension cable to reduce wear and strain if doing many connect/disconnects.

A local TV repair shop might be able to replace, or wire a new HDMI port for the TV quicker than sending it to an authorized repair center (where you might not see your set for up to six months).

As for using the USB port, unfortunately, it cannot be used to convey a video stream. The USB ports on a TV are usually used as Memory Readers for the built-in Media Player, where you can connect a USB Memory Stick or USB Hard Drive for media playback, or maybe connecting HID (Human Interface Devices) like a mouse and keyboard to be used to interact with the TV interface. It's very unlikely the set can support any other use of the USB platform.

On some mobile phones and tablets the USB ports serve a dual purpose, also acting as an USB/MHL connector allowing streaming to an HDMI/MHL compliant display device. This doesn't help you, as your display is probably only HDMI compliant and the port is broken.

If the TV has component video you could use that as an alternative input (even purchase an HDMI to Component converter, if needed).

Though you would probably get the best benefit by having the HDMI port repaired.

As I said in my post, I did have an extension HDMI, ( a splitter box with 3 inputs and 1 output.), but the HDMI cable I was using to connect from the box to the TV was faulty.

I was planning to buy a new cable tomorrow, but in the meantime the HDMI input has been damaged due to the constant changing of input.

It is a nightmare to take the TV screen down from its mountings above the bar and take it to the repair shop, and also very costly. I have only just had it put back since the inside was attacked by jing jocks. that cost me 6,500 Baht plus labour to take down and put back up again.

Hence the reason I was looking for an alternative solution.

I don't wish to doubt you, but I have been assured that HDMI to USB was possible, and I have seen a few web sites that show adapters for HDMI to USB. I was just wondering if they were available in Thailand. Are you sure this wouldn't work?

I do have a component 'in' on the TV so could I get an HDMI to Component adapter?

Thanks

Sorry, I can now see that you are correct about the USB. It will work from USB on a laptop to HDMI on a TV but not the other way round for the reasons you have stated.

However, I am very keen on HDMI to Component ports. I have seen a lot of cable adapters on the web that perform this function.

Why are you not keen on me using the component ports?

Let's see what a couple of the other 'richer' members say.

Could you post the Make/Model of the set, while we're waiting. That would help in looking up specs and capabilities.

If they're available in Thailand then you will probably find them in the specialist type stores that sell home theatre systems and media players. The ones you find on US websites are about $50 so you are going to struggle to find them in the shops in every IT mall that sell dirt cheap HDMI cables and connectors. Otherwise try ebay or alibaba.

I'm looking for a cheap solution, otherwise I might as well have the HDMI port repaired.

HDMI to component seems to be the solution... I think?,,,

That or a similar HDMI-to-Component cable adapter would be great to connect your laptop or even a media box to the Component In on the TV.

Just know that if you use an HD Cable or HD Satellite Set Top Box that many service providers will BLOCK content from being delivered over a Component connection and require an HDMI-to-HDMI connection that supports High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) before the content can be viewed in high definition. HDCP usually affects LIVE SPORTS and MOVIES delivered by the service provider.

Otherwise, it should give you just as good a picture.

One of my sources is just that... Satellite live sports via CTH.

Do you think I will have a problem?

The only way to be sure would be to try it.

Live Sports is a money maker for companies like CTH, True, etc. If they allow the content to be easily converted to Component Video then it's all too easy for people to take that content and stream in live onto the Internet. That's why they require HDMI Only connections because HDCP requires the end-point device (TV/Display-Only) can be verified before the signal is allowed to pass.

Component Video may work fine with some live content, but not give any picture (blocked) on other content. It can change at any time, even mid viewing.

I’ve just read the following in the online user manual:

Component Transmits the analog video and audio signals from an external device to the TV

HDMI …Transmits digital video and audio signals from an external device to the TV.

So that seems to suggest that I will be transmitting analog rather than digital signals if I go the component route.

Will there be any reduction in quality – assuming it works at all?

You can get all those cables/adapters from advice.co.th outlets, if not in store then 48hr wait for delivery.

The Thai company charges ~ twice what you would pay if buying from China via ebay, but delivery time is 10+ days. AA

According the specifications the 50pn4500 has 2 hdmi ports, one on the side and one on the rear. I guess you were using the one the side. However, the component input is also at the rear so as you have to access the rear anyway you use as well the hdmi input there.

I only wish the TV did have two HDMI inputs as if so I wouldn't have been having these problems. I know some specs say 2 HDMI's but mine only has one. God knows why....

But do as Richcor advises and buy an HDMI extension cable, so you don't have to break another HDMI port on your TV.

If you read the thread you will see that I do have an extension HDMI box/cable , but couldn't use it for a few days as the cable from it was faulty. This is when the port became broken.

I searched Tuk com from one end to the other, (including Amorn) with pic in hand to show them but 'no have' anywhere. Then I went to Power Buy on Pattaya Klang - no have either.

I gave up and had the TV taken down and tomorrow will take to the repair shop and get a new HDMI port fitted ... I hope.

In the meantime, the men who took down the TV from its mountings succeeded in destroying a 10 meter HDMI cable, by manhandling the connector at one end... gr....

This is not my week for HDMI problems

Lets hope the shop can replace the port...watch this space.

C'Mon, please. Just bring it to the right place and get it fixed. here in the Isaan it wouldn't be expensive at all. Less than a lady drink...

Yes, please keep us informed.

My bedroom TV and also my Android TV Box have faulty HDMI ports (loose contact at the connector).

Collected the TV from the repair shop, with a nice new shiny HDMI port.

Called in the labour to have it re-mounted, turned it on and guess what - the port doesn't work properly - intermittent flashing colours, perfect for a second and then off!.... mainly off....

Waggled the plug, picture returns for a second then goes again.

Tried the second input cable - same problem.

Both source cables work perfectly on my replacement TV from home.

Back to the shop tomorrow... after we get the labour in again to take it down.

I know I should have checked if it worked before I had it put back up.

I will next time

This is turning into a real saga, (or should I say nightmare)

Probably a "cold solder joint" on one or more of the new connections. 19 pins plus shell ground ...that's a lot of precision soldering.

When it comes back fixed, I'd recommend add back a new pig-tail extension (as you had before) but put a strain-relief on the cable, screwed to the TV or the wall, so there's no weight or stress on the TV connector.

Posted

You should use a 360° adapter with a pigtail extension permanently plug to the TV so only the pigtail will be broken by plugging and unplugging components.post-15246-0-03495700-1413306378_thumb.j
