PHUKET: -- Public and private sector groups have agreed to help fund the installation of more CCTV cameras for Phuket's main tourist spots following discussions between OrBorTor heads and local hoteliers, Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong revealed Monday (Oct 13).

City of Phuket, local administrations and tourist businesses will work together to set up CCTV for all tourists destinations in Phuket to help prevent crime in the areas, Governor Nisit told the press following a meeting at Phuket provincial Hall with Phuket Provincial Police chief Maj Gen Pachara Boonyasit and business leaders.

"Tourist safety is crucial for Phuket. Whenever crime rears its ugly head, it can severely affect the tourism industry, which raises the question of how we can better prevent crime and ensure safety for all tourists with limited man power," said Governor Nisit.

Currently we have only 1,000 police officers on patrol in Phuket. If we set up more CCTV cameras across the island, especially in tourists spots, we can help ensure better safety for tourists and help police track criminals more easily.

Phuket currently has 647 CCTV cameras operated by the police and another 611 operated by the OrBorTor.

At least 10 hotels have agreed to help with funding the additional cameras, said the governor. However, he did not reveal the proposed number of new cameras to be installed nor the amount of funding required.

People are not safer unless someone is monitoring the cameras and can send assistance. Otherwise the public are still assaulted/robbed/killed and the photos may be used to help catch a culprit, hopefully the right one. CCTC didnt prevent the tragedy in Koh Tao. !!

How do you monitor over 1250 cameras. It couldn't be that there are many officers watching screens. It must go to computer files as it would require too much man power.

Therefore the cameras are only any good to look at what happened after the fact. Well that is unless you knew in advance to watch a specific site.

It won't make people safer it will just record what happens.

Maybe that will discourage the bad guys?

Hopefully thats the case.

Sorry biggles45, just expanding the same point of view.

CCTV assists "reactive" policing.

What Phuket has been sadly lacking, for several years, is "proactive" policing, and I am not talking about fining people for not wearing a helmet.

They recently staked out a 7/11 to catch an armed robber. They need this type of policing against the young gangs, and the drug users on Phuket.
