Former Pheu Thai MPs petition junta chief Prayut over impeachment



BANGKOK: -- Four former MPs of the Pheu Thai party today petitioned Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-ocha questioning the power of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) to impeach the two former parliament speakers indicted by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC).

The four included the outspoken spokesman Prompomg Nopparit, Amnuay Klangpa submitted the petition to the junta chief via officials of the people’s service centre inside Government House.

In the petition which was supported by 80 former MPs and people, they claimed the 250-member NLA has no power to impeach and remove former parliament president and House speaker Somsak Kiatsuranont, and former Senate speaker Nikhom Wairachpanich because the power given to the NLA to impeach had been aborted after the 2007 Constitution was scrapped by the military junta.

Moreover the existing provisional constitution also has no clause that empowers the NLA to impeach and remove holders of political posts.

They insisted that the move against the NLA’s impeachment role was neither politically motivated nor a political movement.

They also said their petition to Gen Prayut was not to indicate the junta chief has dominance over the NLA, but merely to urge the military junta to take cautious legal steps so as to enable peace and order in the country.

A former Pheu Thai MP Chavalit Vichaisuth argued that under the provisional charter, the NLA is powerless to remove the former speakers, but to only remove the NLA members who violate parliamentary regulations.

If they impeach the two guys for trying to change part of the constitution, what would they do to someone who ripped up the entire thing?

He also disclosed that the NLA whips have resolved that the NLA has power to impeach and remove holders of political posts as is clearly stated in the 2014 provisional charter.

Time to come down hard on these clowns. If they don't have authority, then make a new law. After all they are lawmakers.

They have some good points, but how does their argument hold with martial law?

They are wasting their time.

Thailand is trying to move forwards, they are trying to but up barricades to progress.

It won't be allowed to happen.

PTP are finished This is the precedent for the impeachment of hundreds and they are included in that number, so their attempts are in line with their own ass saving.

They can question it all they want and cite technicalities, but eventually there will be a cast iron provision put in place to make sure impeachments can go ahead.

Come on Rubi you know very well PT have no faith in the constitution court.

When they were in Government they said openly that they would not accept a verdict from that court no matter which way the decision went.

Prompong - nice to see he's still avoiding serving the jail sentence he received, whilst staying in Thailand and keeping in the public light.

He could give his boss some tips on that one.
