george Posted March 16, 2004 Share Posted March 16, 2004 Bt200 billion to develop Chiang Mai into tourism hub CHIANG MAI, Mar 14 (TNA) – A plan to transform Thailand's northern resort province of Chiang Mai into the nation’s leading tourism hub inched closer yesterday, with the promise of central government funding of Bt200 billion over the next five years. Announcing the funding allocation, Mr. Jumphol Chuthima, President of the Chiang Mai Chamber of Commerce, said that the Bt200 billion would be used over the next five years to develop the northern city into a centre of tourism, healthcare, information technology and handicrafts. In term of tourism, the focus will be on the development of related businesses, including international conference centres, centres to showcase goods produced by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and as part of the government's One Tambon One Product (OTOP) scheme, and leading hotels. Noting that Chiang Mai was currently home to around 12 five-star hotels owned by global hotel chains, including Shangri La, Hilton and Sheraton, Mr. Jumphol said that this demonstrated the rapid growth of the province’s tourism industry. Last year, the northern province was visited by three million tourists, almost equally divided between domestic and foreign visitors. Provincial authorities are now trying to boost both the number of tourists visiting the province, and average length of stays. Last year, the province generated Bt40 billion in tourism revenue, and aims to increase this to as much as Bt77 billion within the next three years. Mr. Jumphol said that in term of healthcare provision, the province planned to upgrade the quality of its hospitals to encourage tourists to undertake medical checks and treatments. He also noted that considerable progress had been made on plans to transform Chiang Mai into an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) city, and that a call centre had already been established, while several educational institutions had expressed a willingness to take part. Sure let's make another IT city, next to phuket , ko samui, chonburi and bangkok. They are still to ingorant to couple two computers in a network and are going to make an extra IT city...let's trow in some NANO technologie also.. Maybe they can shout for another 3000 Foreign IT specialists to come here. So they can all NOT find work and need to open a bar somewhere... Tomorrow there is an ASEAN meeting in New Zeeland to discuss the lack of adequate IT personell in the asian regions??? HEY idiots, WE are here already... Maybe you should open your eyes and reply to some Resume's instead of pressing the DELETE button. Ko Samui's much publicised IT COMPLEX is by god an empty building with an internet cafe downstairs and one web provider in the offices.. BUT they have 1 gb Fiber link ...blablabla...(wireless is for free by the way, password is user1, login also.) ???? I think everybody in thailand Sleeps.... They are dreaming enough for it anyway... Natural Resources and Environment Permanent Secretary Mr. Plodprasob Suraswadi said the foundation laying ceremony was scheduled to be held on April 13, which is the Songkran day. The army's engineering unit is accelerating work to transform more than 600 rai of land to be the night safari. The construction works include the man-made lake, fence, animal display areas and eight buildings, which are expected to be completed for the ceremony next month. The Permanent Secretary said that the Chiang Mai night safari would be unique as it would be a perfect blend between Thai Northern style and African environment. Meanwhile, Mr Sophon Dumnui, the director of The Zoological Park Organization of Thailand told TNA that the organization requested zoos all over the country to support the night safari’s plan to acquire 38 kind of animals for display. Some animals would be exchanged with the zoos abroad under the government-to- government exchange agreement and some animals would be bought from zoos in other countries, he said. Chiang Mai had been mentioned only second to Ecuador as the most popular Expat places. Just like Las Vegas, they have started counting your worth before getting off the plane, and they continued to build hotels as the need dwindled. The good ole stuff that made the place famous will soon be gone, and the traffic will get worse. The government needs to start playing fair, or I will be taking my business elsewhere. Like to know where your brother got his source from. Seems a bit unusual how a city can be compared to a whole country for anything, never mind as a popular expat location. I seriously doubt either of these places ranks as most popular for expats and would like to know if anyone has some stats on the actual top spots.
