Is 20,000 bhat cash required for Americans entering on tourist visa?

Featured Replies

Been enjoying reading thaivisa for some time, Thought I'd 'pull the trigger" and finally join. Recently retired been in India for 3 months departing for Thailand on October 31. I'm a citizen of the USA.

I'm 62 and planning to enter on tourist visa and convert to a retirement visa later. My question is do "you, we" really have to enter the country carrying 20,000 bhat in cash?

i've been to Thailand many, many times with an American visa exempt 30 day stay with no financial requirements. I'd rather not carry that amount of cash but if it's actually madatory what can you do?

I've also copied detailed bank and credit card statements per the Thai embassy's tourist visa guidelines. Any info greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance...

it is rare for the cash to be asked for.

Most of those that have been asked are people with many back to back tourist visas and exempt entries that are pulled to the side because immigration suspects the are working here illegally.

Ia lso don't want to travel with that amount of cash on me. Though I have entered the country three times this year without ever being asked, I carry a little over that amount in traveler's cheques, Also serves as emergency funds should I ever lose wallet/ATM card, someone having the cheques' numbers at home. Not as convenient as an ATM card but easier to have replaced abroad.

Just remember at some point you may need to "nest" 800K THB in a Thai bank to qualify for a retirement visa unless that is you're married to a Thai lady or have another visa option.

Unless you have already opened a bank account here it might still be worth your while bringing with you the USD/INR equivalent of 20,000 THB in cash for initial start-up purposes. You can exchange this into THB cash at a bureau-de-change at BKK before passing through Immigration. Much cheaper (and considerably less risky) than sticking a foreign credit/debit card into a Thai ATM for cash!

Why would he get ripped off at the airport exchanging money. There are better deals in town to be had exchanging money Vasu for one on Soi 7/1 Sukhumvit.

14 trips there and I have never seen anybody asked to show any pocket money. Having said that, I am sure that if you look like a bum, dress like a bum, have questionable VISA ins and outs, etc. you might get the once over.

20,000 baht is less than $700 USD. That shouldn't be a big concern about traveling with that amount of money. I bring a couple of thousand USD when I go over there. I prefer not to use my ATM cards unless I stay longer than my typical one month or so.

As for the retirement stuff, how much money you will need depends on if you are doing the cash method or the monthly income method to qualify for retirement. As others have mentioned there are some time seasoning requirements.

From my own experience and from more than a dozen of mates (Germans, Swiss) who travel here at least once a year:

no one has ever been asked to show money or other assets.

(they all don't look like hippies or tramps)

First time I read about it was here in the forum, where certain nationals passing the southern landborders (typical back-to-back runners) had been checked. Nationalities on the watch were Russians, South Koreans, Vietnamese and ? forget.
