Former finance minister expresses support for govt economic policies

BANGKOK, 30 Oct 2014 (NNT) - A former finance minister has weighed in on the government's economic policies as the Thai economy begins to recover.

Former finance minister Teerachai Bhuvanartnaranubala has expressed satisfaction with the new government’s economic stimulus programs, saying it has steered Thailand away from suffering in the long-run.

He noted that it was important for the government to continue with its stimulus measures as the global economy has remained relatively stagnant especially in the United States, the European Union, Japan, and China.

Mr.Teerachai also called for public support to the government’s plans on infrastructure development especially in the transport sector, such as the dual-track rail and water transport systems, as it would help lower costs for the private sector. He added that it would also facilitate cross-border logistics in the future.

In addition, the former finance minister said the government’s policies to lower costs for the agriculture sector and increase income for rice and rubber farmers, would increase short-term cash circulation. However, he said the government should consider infrastructure development to enhance accessibility to utilities such as constructing community water sources, warehouses, and rice mills, which would not only stimulate the economy, but also benefit the agricultural sector in the long-run.

Meanwhile, Mr.Teerachai spoke of the overall economy this year that growth would be limited considering the lingering effects of political turmoil in the first 5 months, despite the private sector having regained confidence in the 3rd and 4th quarters. He suggested that the government promote more private investments to drive economic growth.

I can't understand the logic of his suggestions.

"He noted that it was important for the government to continue with its stimulus measures as the global economy has remained relatively stagnant especially in the United States, the European Union, Japan, and China."

So there are fewer markets for Thai goods.

"Mr.Teerachai also called for public support to the government’s plans on infrastructure development ..."

Where are the funds coming from? Foreign investment? He just stated that the global economy is stagnant.

"In addition, the former finance minister said the government’s policies to lower costs for the agriculture sector and increase income for rice and rubber farmers, would increase short-term cash circulation. "

We've seen how well that policy has recently turned out.

"He suggested that the government promote more private investments to drive economic growth."

Yes. The private investments will increase....In other ASEAN nations where the labor is cheaper, where it is easier to set up a business, and the populace is more educated to fulfill the needs for modern production.

Thaksin policies right down to better relationship with Cambodia and China. Seem nothing for the south.

And that is the sad tale of the New and Improved govervment. Thus far, it has brought little economic innovation beyond the previous administration.

True. And Yingluck had done better with the South to get actual the insurgents interested in having talks with the government using autonomy as the sweetner, much against Thaksin and military objections.
