AMLO probe found links to well-known families; guilty could face long jail terms

BANGKOK: -- MORE than 10 legal entities, with the help of several individuals, conducted transactions worth more than Bt996 million related to the futsal-pitch corruption scandal, according to the Anti-Money Laundering Office (Amlo).

Nominees involved in this case, if convicted, may face jail terms of over 100 years each. Amlo began looking into transactions related to the Office of Basic Education Commission (Obec) project to build futsal pitches for its schools earlier this year, after some parents and schools began complaining that the pitches were of poor standard and voicing suspicion of possible corruption.

According to the Office of Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC), Obec had got more than Bt600 million to build futsal fields at 358 schools in 17 provinces. "We already know who now holds the money and how the amount got into their hands," Amlo secretary-general Seehanat Prayoonrat said yesterday. He said a total of 265 transactions were related to the futsal-pitch project.

"All people, legal [bodies] or individuals, involved in the transactions must explain themselves to us," Seehanat said.

Information from Amlo reveals that some suspects come from famous families, while some are nominees, and some entities involved are local administrative bodies. Some parts of the ill-gotten gains have reportedly been turned into stock options.

Seehanat said the Amlo would be able to seize the suspects' assets, based on its probe into the flow of money, after the National Anti-Corruption Commission and PACC Commission find them guilty.

"Those involved in the transactions should prepare necessary documents if they wish to prove that they got the assets legitimately," he said.

This govt needs a scapegoat to prove they can achieve anything. Futsal, a political football.

Land scandal, koh tao, they need a diversion.

Seehanat tells the bad people the AMLO is going to sieze their assits and threatens them with jail and last on his warning list is the culprits should prepare documents to prove they are not guilty of corruption/theft. What does he expect them to do to produce these documents, are they for sell at B2S shops?

More advance warning to the wrongdoers by officials involved in investigation of alledged criminal offenses. I reckon the next step in the Thai legal process is the accused hire legal council (famous families may have on payroll/retainer)who will ask for postponement of proceeding as they have not been notified of the charges nor given enough notice to prepare a defense nor manufactor/buy documents that are required.

This statement precludes any need for investigation, and removes any excuse for doing nothing. Know who it is, who's got the money and how, Get on with the criminal prosecutions. Or is this just a troll for bribes, we know who you are, pay now to avoid it being made public.

Prison sentences here are handed down on a sliding scale ranging from life to zero depending on your social status. If the present administration wants to prove that the coup really was about reform rather than returning to the status quo they need to come down hard on the corrupt, even if they are of the same social group as those involved in the seizure of power.
