ANTI-COUP MOVEMENT
Foreign Ministry to clarify position on three-finger gesture

BANGKOK: -- The Thai Foreign Ministry will invite the local representative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Matilda Bogner, to meet with them in order to clarify the recent incident in which people were questioned after making three-finger gesture.

Bogner told AFP that this case is the latest illustration of a worrying pattern of human rights violations, which has the effect of suppressing critical and independent voices."

FM spokesman Sek Wannamethee said his ministry was prepared to invite Bogner to discuss and clarify the matter. "We hold the view that if there are any questions in the future, she should discuss these with the Foreign Ministry through the existing channel. In addition, the ministry will assign the Thai ambassador and envoy to the UN in Geneva, to seek a meeting with the UN human rights commissioner there.

In his first official visit to Khon Kaen province last week, Prime Minister Prayut Chanocha was greeted by five students staging a protest in front of the stage where he was giving an address at Khon Kaen Provincial Hall.

The students from Khon Kaen University were detained after making a threefinger salute at the PM. The salute is associated with the anticoup movement. They were later released after meeting with military authorities accompanied by their parents.
