December 18, 201411 yr Thailand to export 11 million tons of rice this yearBANGKOK: -- Thailand will surely regain the world's rice exporter champion after it is now confident to export 11 million tons by end of this year.Thai Rice Exporter Association president Charoen Laothammathat said Thailand has already exported 10.07 million tons since January to December 2 this year, a 67% increase as compared with same period last year’s of merely six million tons.He said as now rice prices are returning normal after the end of the rice-pledging scheme, export could rise to 11 million tons at end of the year. This would make Thailand the leader among rice exporting countries after losing the title to India for two consecutive years, he said.He forecasted that India could export only 8.5 million tons this year, and Vietnam 6.7 million tons.Honorary chairman of the association Mr Kongkiat Opaswongkarn, meanwhile, said that rice export next year of the country is likely to be close to this year’s export figure. But it could hardly push up Thai rice price next year because of the huge rice stocks of 17 million tons which will remain a major factor to deter the price rise.Total global rice stocks now is 106 million tons, he added.Source: http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/thailand-export-11-million-tons-rice-year -- Thai PBS 2014-12-18

December 18, 201411 yr Will we ever know the truth? How do you dare to doubt a man, who single handedly brought down the worldmarket prices on oil just to deliever happiness to his people. Edited December 18, 201411 yr by JOC
December 18, 201411 yr Popular Post I wonder how they do that, since only a few days ago they announced that from the 18 million tonnes in stock only 1.8 million was edible. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/772234-pm-prayut-only-10-percent-of-18-million-tonnes-of-rice-in-stockpiles-are-good/?hl=%20rice%20%20checked BANGKOK: -- Only 10 percent of the 18 million tonnes of rice in stockpiles since June are of good quality and in good condition, 70 percent of them are of poor quality with the grains turn yellowish and the rest 20 percent have become rotten and inedible, said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha on Tuesday.
December 18, 201411 yr This is a 1 year fling because the majority of the rice exported was in stockpile from the rice scheme. So how can they even possibly believe next year will reap the same in exports?

This may surprise you, my dear Anthony, but every year Thailand produces between 35 and 40 million tonnes of paddy which turns into 22 - 28 million tonnes of rice. About half I think is locally consumed (by Thai that is). Edited December 18, 201411 yr by rubl
December 18, 201411 yr Will we ever know the truth? We know the truth, but we are not allowed to comment about it. Oh! You mean Thai rice prices, and what is actually going out the door marked as top quality? No, I doubt we will ever know the truth on that issue as well.

You are absolutely no good at Thai math.

December 18, 201411 yr Where we live the present harvest has been going on for a few weeks. Average price is just over 7k bht per tonne which is a little over breakeven. It doesn't help that millions of tonnes are being dumped into the market effectively keeping prices low. Couple that with farmers being told not to grow a new crop and alot of the local canals remaining empty to ram home the point it is a terrible time to be a rice farmer. Crowing about being number 1 exporter is no consolation to the hundreds of thousands who have had their livelyhood decimated.
December 18, 201411 yr Just a thought: if there is too much rice, and there are other crops that can grow year-to-year, and they say they want rice and rubber stockpiles to go down...well, why not figure out what can be grown and give away free seeds? Be a lot cheaper than any cash scheme. Would be hard to corrupt if the seed bank requires ID. Would actually....help the whole situation on almost every side. Example: one bag of american seed corn from a cooperative is about 65.00 US for 2.3 acres. That's about 2,000 baht for almost five rai of corn......
December 18, 201411 yr Why is so hard for some you to believe ? It takes 2 min to look up the historical annual Thai rice exports. 8 - 10 million tons is the norm see chart. Get out of this midset that everything reported by THai organisations are distorted. THey can be easily verified ! Edited December 18, 201411 yr by pattayasnowman
December 18, 201411 yr Popular Post Growing something else may not be an option. The wife and I would love for her to stop using one 20 rai block for lice and use that land to grow fruit trees but the problem is the land is too wet during the rainy season and trees would die from root rot. We can't afford to pump water out and adding dozens of truck loads of soil will only shift the problem to her other blocks. So folks, lets not see suggestions growing an alternative crop as the panacea to the farmers woes.
December 18, 201411 yr Go on Thailand, you have regained the top spot in exporting rice. But are you going to be able to hold onto first place during the next few years ? With encouragement and leadership from the government, I think you will. Thailand IS number one.
December 19, 201411 yr The production cost of Thai farmers is also the highest among other rice growing countries in ASEAN. The result is thatMyanmar and Vietnam rice farmers earn 50%+ higher profits than Thai farmers. There is no economic reward to Thailand for being the #1 VOLUME exporter of rice. Thailand needs to be the #1 PROFIT MARGIN exporter of rice for any meaningful economic measure. Thailand needs to substantially lower production costs or replace part of the rice crop with other crops having higher profit margins. Just more Junta amateur economics . December 19, 201411 yr I just remembered that this time last year, the government predicted that this year Thailand would reclaim the world's rice leader title. With Thailand, it's alway about tomorrow and never about now. -------------------------------------- 2013-11-19 19:38:19 Thailand to reclaim world's leading rice exporter role next year LINK Edited December 19, 201411 yr by NeverSure
