Probe on DSI officials to be ready soon

BANGKOK: -- The Department of Special Investigation is expecting to see initial investigation results by next week on whether its agents have been taking bribes from a fugitive petrol smuggler based in the far South, DSI director-general Suwana Suwanjata said yesterday.

The investigation has taken longer than expected because some agents implicated in the case sought to postpone their statements, while the entire process needed to be fair to all. She said the agents were not being protected, but investigators needed time to get detailed information.

The DSI said it had made good progress on four cases related to encroachment of land in four locations, and could now hunt down the four people behind it. The agency has accepted 1,815 cases this year and completed 1,502 of them. Next year, DSI will also focus on educating the public about fraud and pyramid schemes, she said.

The DSI agents being investigated were included in the lists of allegedly corrupt officials seized from the home of Pattani-based Sahachai Jiansermsin, who is fleeing a sentence for forging court seals. The other alleged bribe takers included in the list are security officials and Marine Police officers who were subordinates of former Central Investigation Bureau commissioner Lt-General Pongpat Chayaphan, who is also facing prosecution on a number of offences including armed intimidation.

Meanwhile, a source from Sam Sen Police Station said there was no evidence against Palida Lakchaloemphorn, who had been implicated in a number of catering deals involving Sudathip Muangnual, who is under detention.

The source quoted Palida as saying in her statement to Sam Sen police that Sudathip used her name as a stakeholder in a company she ran. However, the source said, the evidence showed that Palida had no links with Sudathip's alleged wrongdoings.
