Gunther Holtorf's 23-year road trip

Featured Replies

My new hero. Check out the video. Pretty cool.

Back in 1989, as the Berlin Wall fell, Gunther Holtorf set out on what was meant to be an 18-month tour of Africa in his Mercedes Benz G Wagen. Now, with more than 800,000km (500,000 miles) on the clock, Gunther is still going.

The German former airline executive has travelled the equivalent of 20 times around the planet in the vehicle - which he calls Otto. He says he has never had a serious breakdown. Recently in Vietnam, Canadian-born photographer David Lemke joined Gunther on one section of his epic journey.

He managed the almost impossible: got a permission to travel to North Korea with his car.

In summer 2011 he was the first foreigner to achieve this.

A German magazine has created this interesting website (also in English).

On the right side you can hover over the timescale and see the countries visited each year.

2011 was the year when he travelled through South East Asia and up to China.

A total of 3000 pictures from his journey.

And all pictures via traditional film. Nothing digital. Remember those days? LOL

He also traveled to Cuba. Not an easy thing to do. Very impressive couple.
