Are Thai-US relations warming up slowly?

This Thai writer rambles on again wishing and hoping that the figments of his imagination were real. He and Thais long for a position of value in the world and to belong. Unfortunately, no one is interested in Thailand or especially what Thais think. The US is wasting US taxpayer dollars trying to salvage Thailand from its own self destruction.

USA is interested in Thailand:

1) Geographical location to China just like the USA used Thailand for Vietnam.

2) Food source and for USA to sell GM Crops

3) There is oil in the north of Thailand and USA was already involved in the extraction of this.

4) There is Gold (not sure how much and cost of extraction) in the north of Thailand.

The USA was well cheesed off with the Thai army take over because it would appear Thaksin family were selling off Thailand to the USA.

Ask yourself the real reasons that USA were interested in Afganistan.

Uugh...uugh, Im thinking, maybe 911?

Afghanistan had little if anything to do with 911.

The terrorist involved were from Saudi arabia.

Yes, Osama was in Afghanistan at the time, but he was not an Afghan.

Did you vote to reelect GW?

Afghanistan was all about getting oil the US wanted to ports they could ship it from.

Silly me...I forgot all about the famed Afghani oil fields and the deep water ports they have for supertankers.

Willy - get yourself an Atlas and have a look at exactly where Afghanistan is.

They are talking about Afganistan not Iraq. The USA got involved in Afganistan in the 1980's. They got involved to help Afanistan push out Russia.

To answer OP no! relations with USA are not warming up and are soon to get quite frosty.

To answer Cashboy;

#1 US doesn't need Thailand for use of airbase or seaport anymore. After 8 months of negotiations the US has signed a 10 year lease/treaty with the Phillippines to reopen and use SubicBay and the airbase near there. After being out of the Phillipppines for over 22 years the US is welcomed back and does not need Thailand for Asian manuvers ( Cobra Gold ) or geografic strategic importance . Oh and is this coincedance? after 8 months of negotiations the US the ratified the agreement--how long ago was the coup? 8 months !

#3 The US doesn't need any oil in Thailand ( or anywhere else) with the fracking and new pipeline from Canada the US is swimming in oil thats why the price has come down from $115 a barrel in begining of year to less than $50 a barrel now.

#4 Gold ? who wants it maybe India for jewlry but otherewise countries don't back their money with gold reserves anymore.

With the re-opning of SubicBay the Phillippine economy is about to skyrocket and will boom like Thailands after the US improved Thailand's infrastructure during and after the viet-nam war. With all the troops stationed there spending money year round not just 2 weeks for Cobra Gold they will soon surpass Thailand's econmy especially if the US sanctions Thailand along with the EU.

Another reason I think US reopned the base is Thailand's agreement to open an embassy in North korea.

You might need to re-think things.

1) The USA has bases in South Korea, Japan and Singapore with limited support in the Philippines but that might change. The US is speaking to Vietnam which Vietnam has been open to talks.

2) The USA imports Shrimp, Tuna and few Agriculture products, but with the recent free trade agreement with Vietnam if the USA was forced to make a change they could. Thailand has a ban on all GMO imports.

3) Havn't heard anything about oil in the north, Thailand does have oil in the Gulf of Siam but they use all of this themselves and still need to import. The USA at this time is now out producing OPEC and is in not need of small amount of oil that Thailand might have available.

4) Not much gold in Thailand, Laos has a good amount. Also Thailand as a ban in gold exports and actually imports gold from the USA.

I know the reason the USA was in Afghanistan, please tell me your thoughts on this as i think you have no clue.

bassman..you are being silly.

I have a pretty good atlas. It is called Google.

Here is one of many maps in my atlas showing the gas/oil pipeline crossing Afghanistan and Pakistan planned by the Cheney administration before 911.

It is not difficult to use Google bassman.Give it a try sometime!

I agree, Thailand has no direct benefit for the U.S., for now.

Logistically, Thailand will benefit China. Along with a few other countries, it won't be long before China has land access to the Malacca Straits. This gives China a buffer in case of any problems in the South China Sea vis a vis Japan and the U.S. Note, VN does not have to be involved.

In addition, for trade purposes, the new rail system gives Mainland access to the "New China". New China comprises Thailand, Myanmar, VN, Cambodia and Laos. Economically, the New China has been compared to Mainland 20 years ago. Note, VN does not have to be involved, although I suspect it will very much want to be involved.

Taking advice from the USA is like taking a drug rehab course from a drug dealer. They cannot run their own country and here they are giving advice.

Interesting....

The United States has been the most successful, richest, most powerful and influential country on the planet since the end of WWII, about 30 years now.

No, they are not a utopia, but they are doing pretty well!

Can you name me any other country that is run as well?

Even one??
