Is AIS mobile WiFi any good?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I see there is the @AISwifi network where I am. It says its 99 baht a month to connect, however you must be an AIS customer to try it.

How does this service work? I'm tempted to buy a USB mobile Wifi dongle and an AIS sim to get online as I am having trouble with the True wifi.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Why would you need a Mobile WiFi unit to connect to a WiFi signal. You are confusing two completely different things.

To use AIS WiFi, you need one of their SIMs, simply to be able to register and to receive the username and password to be able to log into the service.

Pop the SIM into your phone.Top up to at least 110 baht. Dial *388#icon_telephone.gif to receive a username and password. Once received, connect to AIS WiFi and enter your username and password. That's it.

Mobile WiFi is something completely different.

Ah sorry. I thought you had to connect using a device with an AIS SIM card in.

In that case I will do as you suggest to get the login details and then connect that way.

Thanks.

The AIS and DTAC mobile network 99฿ WiFi add-on option BOTH use 3BB WiFi Hotspots to augment their own WiFi network.

You can also go to 3BB to subscribe to their WiFi Hotspot service directly, though many people find using their AIS or DTAC mobile phone to pay and receive the OTP easiest.

WIFI - shared network, if they arent multi channel they AP can only talk to one device at a time, then they probably plug the AP in the DSLAM with all the ADSL connections so there is contention on the upstream as well. bah.gif

Thanks. I got an AIS sim and got my login and can now connect to AIS from my phone or laptop (not at the same time).

Its a pretty fast connection where I was - I think about 10MB down when I did a speed test.

Spouse: How are you using the Internet on the laptop, I take it you are not using a dongle?. If you are using the phone as a hotspot to connect to the Internet, you should be able to use the Internet on both the phone and the laptop at the same time.
There is a 30 day AIS wifi package for 69 Bhat, which is billed per week to your pre-pay balance (around 17 Bhat). Although, AIS wi-fi is only available at shopping malls and BTS Skytrain stations (in Bangkok). I have used this and found the wi-fi on the mobile device to be slow sometimes.
Have you tested your connection at many locations?, is it around 10Mb throughout. Also, what mobile data package did you go for. There is a package that offer 300Mb data for 30 days at 239 Bhat, and another that offers unlimited data (with limitations) for one month at 399 Bhat.
By the way, I noticed with some data packages, AIS wi-fi is included (the 399 Bhat package).
