1. Can you enter Australia on an expired Australian Passport?

2. How do you get the ETA eVisa for Australia when the government website has problems processing the payment? Is there another way to get this this, like at the embassy?

Getting out of Thailand might be the bigger issue without a valid travel document.

You can get a new passport from the Embassy or a travel document that will let you go home.

To answer your question, I honestly do not know!

dont know the answer to the OP's question ut here's a tip:

if arriving at sydney airport to avoid getting jammed up in the quarantine 'nothing to declare' queue join a 'something to declare' queue - always shorter - and ask if a packet of biscuits pr similar is ok? they'll say yes and ask if you have anything else, say no and off you go

Sorry forgot to mention, this is for my daughter and son who are dual national and currently have 2nd valid passport, but I notice the australian passport has expired for my daughter and will take a couple weeks to renew and was planning an urgent trip.

When you say dual nationalities, Australia and where?

Who would they be flying with?

the expired australian passport question is for my daughter (thai/australian dual citizen) and ETA question is for my son who is american/thai dual citizen(not australian).

You need a valid passport or documents to travel.

The Airline probably won't let you on the plane.

For a new passport it will take a few days. All payments are in cash and in Thai baht.

Normally the application is done online but you have to go to the Australia embassy to apply in person.

If your passport has expired you have to go to the embassy for emergency travel documents.

As far as your daughters expired passport. Ask the embassy while you are there probably the same precedure as you.

If they has an American passport which is valid she will need a Aust visa which I think can be done online with Americans. If not it would be easier to get a new passport. All visitors to Australia need a visa for some countries they make it easy for others [Thailand] it is quite a tedious task.

If you are here in Thailand with an expired passport you must have also overstayed whatever visa the Thai immigration have issued you. [perhaps you also are dual nationality then the same problem as your daughter]

Please note it will not be cheap.

Get an emergency passport from the embassy. Why chance traveling on an expired passport?

It takes 10 working days to get a passport, usually they get it back to you in a week and a bit.

If there is a genuine emergency, then you get the emergency passport which can be upgraded to a full one either in Oz or back here.

Like I said, you can enter Australia on an expired passport if you get uplift approval.

But like krisb said, why risk it.

If it's not an emergency, it will be hard to get an emergency travel document.

You will be better off just applying for a new passport.

thanks everyone for your answers. There is no emergency so I'll just apply for a new passport and wait out the 10 working days. Hopefully I can have those questions answered as well when I'm there. Since my daughter previously arrived into Thailand on her expired Thai passport, I thought it might be the same in Australia.

As already said. no issue to arrive in australia on an expired australian passport..... they issue will be the airline allowing you on the plane to start with.

1. According to the Thai staff (Pornpan - Consular) at the embassy you will not be allowed into Australia on an expired Australian passport. What exactly happens to them she couldn't explain.

2. Renewing Passports now require 15 working days to get back

3. Also ETAs are not issued in Thailand (for those who qualify) and only obtained online through the government website - which is still having problems, has anyone else experienced problems with the online payment system for this type of visa?

Cannot help you with your ETA query but Pornpan is incorrect about getting into Australia on an expired passport.

I guess her not knowing what happens to them says it all.

As stated above, you will need uplift approval by EOC and the airline should do this for you. Some might try

and turn you away because they can't be bothered trying. Once you check into Oz, your passport is then seized by

Immigration (or should be) and sent to DFAT.

A moot point really as you're going to apply for a new passport.
