The Festival of India in Thailand kicked off in Bangkok on Monday night with a sell-out concert. The music, dance and fashion festival will run through May 25.

The second Festival of India kicked off in Bangkok yesterday. After seeing success with its inaugural launch in 2014, the festival returned to the capital with a sell-out concert featuring Sufi singer Sonam Kalra and the Sufi Gospel Project.

Sonam Kalra was trained in both Indian and Western classical music. Her music is uniquely spiritual with Sufi songs being sung to gospel-rhythms. The band consists of Hindu, Muslim and Christian members. The Sufi Gospel Project has won audiences all over the world, including Western Asia, Africa, Europe and the United States.

The Sikh singer was excited to perform in Bangkok. The concert was held at Chulalongkorn University’s Sasin hall. The university is partnering with the Embassy of India in Thailand for the festival.

The 2014 Festival of India focused primarily on the cultural and ancient art ties connected to Thailand and India. This year, the festival is focused on contemporary dynamic productions with exciting new artists. The goal is to introduce modern India to Thailand.

All festival shows are free to the public. Other Indian artists expected to perform include Daksha Seth, Bollywood actress Isha Sharvani and her daughter and musician Raghu Dixit. Raghu Dixit and his multi-lingual band performed at Queen Elizabeth’s 2012 Diamond Jubilee Pageant.

A literary event, called Words on Water, will also be held at the festival. The event will feature five contemporary Indian writers. On March 6, the festival will host “Assam Evening,” which will be a show of ethnic dance and costumes. Five Assamese fashion designers will show off their creations amidst classical music and dance performances. Violinist Sunita Bhuyan will be performing.

The Festival of Indian in Thailand is described as a mix of painting, fashion, music and dance, and each program will have representation from Thailand. The festival will continue through May 25.
