Thailand to hold yacht show at the end of this year

BANGKOK, 2 Mar 2015, (NNT) - Thailand is to host its first yacht show at the end of this year. The fair is aimed at promoting tourism and stimulating the economy.

The announcement was made by Deputy Minister of Transport Akom Termpittayapisit who said that the idea was proposed by Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha.

The Prime Minister envisioned that the fair would draw as much attention as the Motor Expo, expecting yacht manufacturers to come to showcase their new, luxurious models at the fair. General Prayut said the campaign would help promoting yacht tourism in Thailand.

According to the Deputy Minister, his Ministry and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports will be tasked with organizing the fair, adding that Pattaya and Phuket are their top choices for the event venue, which is likely to be held in November, the high tourism season.

In addition, the Government also has a plan to construct piers for cruise ships in Krabi and Suratthani provinces, said the Deputy Minister, adding that the Department of Marine is currently conducting a feasibility study.

Phuket and Pattaya are ok in regards to services for yachts. Several marinas and what do you know; each has an annual boatshow. So maybe Prayuth should check one of those out first before claiming to organize Thailand's first.

They have boat shows now in Phuket and Jomtien, why not support both these excellent events - Ocean Marina boat show and Pimex boat show.

The biggest problem is the difference between Phuket and the Gulf, if you clock an international yacht in in the gulf you only get 2 weeks whereas Phuket you get 6 months, making it not very attractive for boats to come to the Gulf from overseas for racing and crusing

If the General says it's the first then it's the first, OK!

And what if you need repairs on your yacht in Thailand?

There are some very capable services in Thailand, Phuket services many of the super yachts that frequent the island, Seal Super yachts is just one company. Tasker are in Phuket for sail repairs and manufacture.

In Jomtien there is Andaman boatyard, blue seas marine, North Sails also have a loft there for repairs, there are 2 other sail makers in Jomtien as well.

And at the same time the xenophobic rulers of this country want all visiting yachts to install AIS tracking devices! No other country in the area requires this expensive and useless equipment for visiting yachts.

Thailand is to host its first yacht show ??? Pimex been a yearly show since 2007 in Phuket. The general should stick to his floating market plan in Bangkok and let professionals operate boat shows

The companies I mentioned do have CE and IMCI certifications, yes they have english speaking staff

So they have english speaking staff who are certified as well. But what if they put the yacht on fire or damage something? Are they insured for that?

Thailand might be willing to get yachtowners here but can they compete with the rest of the world in servicing yachts professionally? I really doubt it but i even have never seen a real yacht in Thailand at all.

All i have seen is public transport boats to the Islands and on the Chao Praya river, they scare the hell out of me that's why i ask. I didn't get the impression the Thai take safety serious. I hope the General also noticed that.

Well they have had Paul Allens boat Octopus in Phuket a few times and serviced it, there are many other super yachts serviced in Phuket as well, in Jomtien they build yachts for Europe, here are some they build

The Octopus looks like a crabboat from Alaska but allright that's a seaworthy yacht.

The ones built in Thailand are more fishingboats i would say. giggle.gif

But i admit they look better then the common longtailboats.

But another thing before i sail my yacht to Thailand wink.png , what if Somchai the squidfisher sails his longtail into my million$ yacht? Is he insured for that?

It would only be a concern if you DON'T have comprehensive insurance yourself whistling.gif

This is what Thailand wants....so far i've only seen bananaboats, longtailboats, speedboats and very dangerous ferry's without lifevests or good rescueboats.

As a good vessel master, it is your responsibility to be aware of all vessels in your vicinity and to either give good warning or take evasive measures.
