I want to buy a sports car....

Recommended Posts

I once witnessed in the UK a road going Nissan Skyline run a 10 second quarter on street tyres...........w00t.gif

I was told the guy spent 50,000 quid on it......sad.png

The 2015 Nissan GT-R Nismo does a 10.1s 1/4 mile stock wink.png

And that's with "just" 600HP -tuning them to 1000HP is practically a snap, and 2000HP has been done.

Here's one doing 7.7s ;)

I don't take myself seriously but I do answer questions seriously when they're asked, was your answer not serious? It should have been. BTW not that my sex life is any of your business, but I get laid plenty, probably more then most here but thanks for your concern anyway

face it mate. This ain't FLA ...it's LOS. Meaning : Chicks here don't dig tans. Ever seen a regular Bangkok gal (insert SG, KL, HK gal at your leisure) not hiding from the sun at every chance?

I will concede to you on matters concerning driving / even fixing cars - but bear with me on this one - 20+ years of visiting / living here I have seen a few things - some even by chance.

Failing that, I suggest you open a car dealership here selling only convertibles and let me know when you passed the 12 month mark of staying in business.

Well, I have a convertible and my 'chick' happens to dig it. She likes the shock effect of people seeing a woman driving a sports car and says people give way and behave nicer in traffic "face to face". She goes sunblock on and top down. The roof is for rain and Bangkok traffic, my Bangkok Girl says.

And; No, she didn't even know I had it until long after we got together.

Cheers.

On the subject of jap cars, Ekanoo Racing just went 5.97 @ 240mph in their 6cyl (2JZ) Supra.

That AMS Alpha Omega car is a beast well over 2000hp to run those numbers.

AMS do a "10 second" engine for the R35, cost is $60,000 USD.

The OEM 10 second option (Nismo) "only" costs $48,220 :)

The 545hp 2015 GTR35 has run a best of 11.1 @ 126mph. The "nismo" @ 600hp runs the same gearing (gearbox and final drive) and the same RPM redline.

I doubt is a 10 second car from the showroom floor.

The AMS "Ronin" package is a proven 10 second vehicle that traps @ 149mph.

Saying that I would give a kidney to have an R35 Nismo parked in my garage.

Were not mixing them up and here's the regs that proves it.

(*) If a Manufacturer doesn’t wish to homologate, develop, produce and sell the race version of cars, either directly or through an independent engineering company, IMSA may accept Tuners presenting the best records, provided the Manufacturer is in full approval of the Tuner.

2.2.1.4 A car is not permitted to undergo technical inspection before taking part in an event if it has not had the homologation approved by IMSA. The Homologation Form must be presented by the Competitor during technical inspection.

2.2.2 Modifications

2.2.2.1 They are allowed for racing purposes:

2.2.2.2 From a base version of the production car and not from a special version based on a restricted or special or limited production;

2.2.2.3 Complying with these technical regulations;

2.2.2.4 The specifications listed in the Homologation Form can be changed only by the Manufacturer or the Tuner and with the agreement of IMSA.

2.2.2.5 Except for safety or reliability reasons, only one evolution per period of 2 years is permitted before the first event of the season in which the homologated model is entered. The period of restriction will begin for 2014 model cars; it will be the same for every car. A car homologated in previous years can use this evolution under the following conditions: • Changes are made on the car by the Manufacturer or Tuner who homologated this car, • The car thus modified is identical to the latest version of the homologated car, • The Manufacturer or Tuner provides to the car owner a copy of the new Homologation Form describing the evolution, • The previous Homologation Form is no longer valid.

2.2.2.6 When elements of the car have undergone successive modification (e.g. rear wing), only one version can be used per year model. For the new cars homologated, 1 evolution

Take note of manufacturer numbers required to compete, that's so no purpose built cars can compete. They have to begin with a base chassis and most of the factory specs.

2.2.3 Lapsed Homologation

2.2.3.1 The homologation will become lapsed: The year following the stop of the production if a minimum of 200 road cars has not been produced (50 for a "Small Manufacturer") 8 years after the stop of the production if at least a minimum of 200 road cars has been produced (50 for a "Small Manufacturer")

In essence this class is FIA Gt 3 class, which is stock based equipment. It's all nonsense anyway to argue that even still Audi, Porsche, etc. couldn't produce a winning car over the much cheaper Viper..

Wow really, Audi, Porsche, etc could not come up with something to beat the much cheaper ($460,000) Viper...... how much were they spending ?

Yes wow, certainly you can't possibly be thinking that you can get into either of those cars in race trim for less then a Viper? cheesy.gif You can imagine they spent double maybe triple that, it's quite easy to do..

I have some questions about the cars mentioned here, and sports cars in general, if you guys can chip in with your knowledge and experience that would be great.

1) Are cars such as Toyota ae100 20v or Honda 3door k20 a good start to test the waters. I see them for around 120K with the engine already swapped in, and I was told can get a body for 80K and get do the engine swap separately.

Is it correct to say they are reliable and easy to maintain at any shop, lots of second hand parts, and there is enough demand to try one for a couple months and sell it without incurring much of a lose, say < 15,000 baht.

2) How about an Evo 4g63 for ~150K with already a bunch of mods, and I see they have ~220 hp. Do you get a more fun factor because its it all wheel drive? What would be the difference in a 2 wheel drive car with 220hp vs a 4 wheel drive 220hp car, just traction?

3)
Regarding suspension, is this just the shocks of a car or the overall frame of a car. I notice in a regular sedan, if braking hard in a turn, the car feels wobbly and unstable, is this because of the soft suspension? Is hard suspension the same as a go kart, where you feel every bump, is this safer for a car at the cost of comfort?
4)
-Which gives the wow feeling of being pressed back in your seat, is it the: Power to Weight Ration, HP, or Torque? Do any of the cars mention above achieve this, such as an Evo 4g64 with 220hp, or would you need upward of 400+hp to have go kart like acceleration?

5) For the cars mention such as:
BMW Z4, BMW E36 M3, Mazda RX, GTO 3000, Supra, Citroen, Mini Cooper, Golf Gti
-How much is roughly first class insurance?
-Do cars hold their value more depending on demand, or just based on the age?
-Which cars have enough demand, so when it comes time to sell, you can sell at market price without suffering a big lose?
-Which car will offer the least headaches in reliability, as well as availability of shops for service and no need to wait weeks for certain parts, or pay extreme expensive prices for repairs? Which cars to avoid?
-For a 1 Million baht car, would the long term average cost of ownership be less than say 100K baht / year in terms of tires, insurance, maintenance, depreciation, and repairs?

Fairly new to all this and this would help me narrow down my choices.

Well then, better know what to look for and be quick to wave! It's a black-on-black Maserati Spyder from the time long before Ferrari ever got involved. Most likely to be sighted in north Bangkok on the Ladprao-Donmuang-Rangsit axis(, but you won't catch a sight of it until end of month as we are visiting the Dark Continent where I work). Think Zagato and Alejandro De Tomaso. It's the one that you reportedly have to hire a mechanic for (,and I practically did for two years to remove all the 'Thainess' installed by the previous owner. He pulled out Toyota, Ford, Volvo, Fiat, etc. parts to no end.) Been running beautiful now for the last 5 years. Life starts at 4000 rpm. cool.png.pagespeed.ce.jz1nB6CMOIVslCCv-1

Note: If you do see it in traffic in this time, it's probably being pussy-footed around by my mechanic. When I'm out of country, I take it to the shop for a combination of service and "long term parking". I leave it with a full tank and pick it up with a quarter remaining. These beasts need to run.

I have a convertible here in Thailand and I can only say you are talking out of your (DELETED) language

Thai's love it, as do everyone else I know here especially the BIB who have yet to get a ticket from in years of driving it here...never even been asked for my licence. It appears that the only person who doesn't like them are you so get over it and back on topic.... fun sports cars for the OP buy.

^MrY, great to see a Maserai fan here. I owned and restored to perfect a 1963 Maserati 3500GT (Maser's first great Gran Turismo). It was a beauty, and fun to drive.

thumbsup.gif

I sure sure wouldn't mind a Mexico, or a Khamsin, or a Bora, or a Merak, or, or ,or, but none of them were to be found in Thailand that time [or now], and I'm a sucker for underdogs. After almost 10 years of having an old Biturbo (there, I said it) as a daily driver, I just laugh off it's bad reputation. But I do have my sights on an Espada now. (Hint; It's not a Maserati.)

Guess it depends what the OP wants. A car for the track or a car with good performance, fun to drive and can cope with most conditions. Some SUVs (SPORTS Utility Vehicle) have pretty hefty performance and are fun to drive. If his budget is large he could even get himself a Porsche.

lol hopeless....how's the heat in FLA these days? Bangkok is a rosy 95+ daily now. Not a sun loving Thai in sight. No denying there are a few convertibles around - haven't seen many in my 15 years here full time but I will take your word for it. Anyways, enough of this bs. You can keep your ideas and I will keep mine and agree we won't agree.
