Former NRC/CDC member denies conflict rumors

BANGKOK, 3 March 2015 (NNT) - A former member of the National Reform Council and the Constitution Drafting Committee has denied rumors that internal conflicts led to her decision to quit her roles.

Mrs. Thicha Na Nakorn, a former NRC and CDC member, said on Tuesday that she had not been in conflict with any fellow member in particular, but stated that she was upset with her inability to achieve an increase in the number of female politicians contesting the next election.

She said that her attempt to include a provision in the new charter that at least one in three lawmakers, from both constituencies and party-lists, must be women, had been defeated by the male charter drafters.

Mrs. Thicha said that other charter drafters who opposed her proposition did not accept her explanation that a minimum number of female politicians was needed to enable women active in local politics, but who don't belong to any political family, to serve in the executive branch.

She added that her proposition had been removed from the CDC agenda at least three times.

Nevertheless, Mrs. Thicha said that she remains grateful to the CDC Chairman Borwornsak Uwanno for his attention to the issue of female representation in politics.

Mrs Ticha says she loses faith and hope with the majority of CDC

BANGKOK: -- Breaking her silence, Mrs Ticha na Nakhon said Tuesday that she resigned as a member of the Constitution Drafting Committee and the National Reform Council because she lost hope and faith with the majority of the CDC over her wish for more political space for women.

The former CDC and NRC member held a press conference to bare all about her abrupt resignation last week which became the talk of the town. She read out a prepared written statement explaining her resignation.

In the statement, she said that she lost faith in communicating with the majority of the CDC regarding the issue about political space for female gender in local councils and list system to account for at least one-thirds of the space.

She said that greater political space for women would bring about social balance and enable more women to play more role in public services. She noted that social balance could not take place naturally but only through “special temporary measures” to ensure that the one-thirds proportion of political space for women was incorporated in the Constitution.

Admitting that there might be some elite women’s groups who disagreed with the one-thirds proportion of political space for women, Mrs Ticha reminded that there were women who did not come from rich or powerful families but who wanted to share their experiences and to have a role in public policy decision-makings but that would not be easy because of male dominance in politics.

Also, she said that she raised objections on following issues.

She disagreed with special privilege for MPs and senators in case they are arrested, pointing out that the special privilege may delay the cases.

Independent committees should be broadly represented. There should not be indirect election of senators and their term in office should not be more than three years.
