My imac often 'offers' me to upgrade my OS to yosemite. I have yet to accept, being comfortable with my current system OSX 10.8.5. I think i read that it was hard to get used to. However, i'm back thinking about it again. Any posters can offer me tips to go ahead or not? I mean based on your personal use of yosemite.

Secondly, i've always worked with iphoto, but feel it's not enough for me. I have learned that aperture is to be discontinued. Any posters got any advice for me?!

Thanks in advance.

^ the new Photos is in beta. If your gonna upgrade I think you have the option to join the beta program.

I had a look and it looks ok, but I haven't done any real playing yet.

I have been using Yosemite for months, now, no real issues over the previous versions,... (you may have to increase your RAM, depending on what you have now)

I have never liked Iphoto, bah.gif your choice could be to try Picasa (free) or Lightroom (paid) .....

There has been a bit of discussion in the photo forum, on some choices, lately... it might be an idea to look therewink.png

Maybe you saw the thread i started asking for software recommendations for, mostly, organising my photos!

It got me thinking whether i should not pay for lightroom, but wait for the new photos from apple. I wonder when it'll be available for the macs? It made me think also that maybe i'll have to get updated to yosemite, hence my thread here now.

I've never quite liked iphotos, and now that i've just bought myself a new camera, i was thinking it might be a good time to evaluate what software i use. What do you use SJ? I see what you recommended, and lightroom seems clearly to be very good, but i did once use ACDSee when i had a PC, and i liked it. But it seems their version for apple doesn't get many good reviews. I'm more into something that is really good for organising and making albums more than editing.

However, back to this thread, perhaps i should just update to yosemite and be done with it. I think i've got 4gb of ram, but not sure. It just says about my computer 4gb of 'memory'.

What is beta?

Yep now see it was you that asked the question in Photo forum!

I used to be a fan of ACDSee, on PC, but last time I tried their Mac Version, it was too slow... processing took for ever! facepalm.gif Even with 8 g of RAM, you may have to seriously look at increasing 4 mg... at some point.

I think for your needs, you will find Picasa good for your needs, (avoid using Google Plus part of it) ... they provide tons of free space which is free!

You can do slide shows, upload your images which is a back up. I have been using it since about 2001 and wished I had used it more as a back up in subsequent years, (I do now!) as even back up drives can burn out! I lost tons of images because I did not use it regularly for years in between.sad.png

Even if say you later want to switch to Lightroom or other program, or see if ACDsee Mac version is any better now (try the free trial) ...

To answer your question about "Beta"... it's when companies are developing new programs and are still in "trial and error"... working out the bugs... theoretically before the new version is released....

I have never been impressed with most Apple/ Mac programs, third party programs are generally better.... so personally, I would not wait for a new version of Iphoto to come out. Iphoto is not going to back your photos up anyway ...

Hope that helps!

Thanks mate, it does help.

Regarding picasa… what do you mean by it provides a back-up? Is that a back-up in the clouds so to speak, ie a back-up off my hard drive? If so, are there any issues of security, having photos 'stolen' and stuff?

One thing i've not liked about iphoto is trying to find the actual files in 'finder'. I"ve just looked again, and everything i import from my camera directly i cannot find the file for! Even in 'all my files'. I can see folders and files for my photos i've imported from my laptop, but not from the camera. I can only see them when i open iphoto.

I shall investigate picasa!

I've never liked iphoto look around and find an application thats fit's what you like, there's plenty out there.

As for Yosemite: I have it currently running on a MacAir and a somewhat aging Mac Mini. It seems to be a lot more stable than some iOS of recent generations, more like the Apple of old. That being said on both systems after trying an upgrade I ended up doing a clean install. The upgrade was hellish. Maybe I was just unlucky, corrupted download or whatever, but after the clean install both are running like a champ and stable as a rock.

The most noticeable improvement was the Mac Mini which had been a literal basket case running Mavericks, lockups crashes etc

Iphoto says that photos belong to Iphoto.... no they don't they belong to me! (or you!!) One reason I hate Iphotos and the limitations...bah.giftongue.png

With Picasa, you have options, when you upload, they can be "private" so only you have access to them, or have available to "only those with link" or public... You can change your choices at any time... but if say you use Picasa to upload to the Photo forum, as some of us do.... if you change or move an image, it will produce a blank... very annoying for the mods and anyone viewing blank!

Public means anyone can view..... That's why I suggested do not use the Google Plus, part of Picasa, because it does not allow you to have "only with link" option, I really do not understand why, they do that....

Also when using the Google plus option, it makes the images too large to post, as you have on the Photo forum! (There is also Flickr which is free through Yahoo... but does not have the pre-editing before you upload option...

I would suggest down load Picasa, and give it a try, it's a little bit of a learning curve, but easier than say Lightroom... certainly easier than Photoshop!

When you save an image in Picasa, use the "Option and S keys", you then preserve the original... it won't get lost unless you actually delete and image!

There is also Smugmug, ... & various other free programs out there too... but I not tried those out, so cannot make a comment...

Give Picasa a go, it will download within a few minutes.... then just experiment, perhaps with some not so good images to start! wink.png

Free storage for tons of photos, I have thousands uploaded... they seem to increase storage space for free!

Thanks SJ, much to go on there. All in good time, but the bit's between my teeth for now.

What did you mean that iphotos own the photos and we do not? Does this explain why i can't seem to find the root files of my photos on my hard drive? Where the eff are they??! Surely they're on my disk? I don't have cloud or anything loaded.

smugmug was recommended me on the other thread, it looked good, but i will give picasa a try.

Ouch, a clean install?? That sort of thing is what stops me upgrading things sometimes! What is it??

Well at some point when you try to say switch to using another program for editing a photo, Iphoto will say that photo (s) belongs to "Iphoto"... it's so long since I saw that, I forget the scenario when it occurs ... but you'll understand when you see it! I did try the other day to get some of my images out of Iphoto..... without success, yet...

As for Smugmug, that is for uploading and sharing, (also selling images feature) ..... I did down load it the other day to try it... not got too far with it yet, to make a comment... Some of the photo guys seem to like it... as some others prefer Flickr... comes down to what you are or get used too, really! I have used Picasa for years and have thousands of folders there, although I do use Lightroom to edit images these days... One has to pay a fee / donation to upload to Picasa or Flickr etc.... when going that route!

Smugmug is not for editing images though... even the simple stuff like correcting a tilting horizon or some thing like that.... so as far as I know Picasa is the only free program you can do both... editing and storing!

As said, before, ACDsee was good on Windoze, but still not quite got it for Mac....last I tried, I believe they now provide some free storage...

Good luck with it all...! thumbsup.gif Which ever program, you choose, it's a "learning curve" facepalm.gif

As for Ginboy2's comment, if one wants a huge and very annoying learning curve, try Windoze 8.... bah.gif I have tried to help friends with that.... Yosemite is a breeze in comparison.... thumbsup.gif

Oh I'm with ya brother. When I say 'hellish' in the context of Apple, that's equivalent to slightly warm as opposed to the burning in Hellfire & damnation that is anything Microsoft Windows related lol
