COURT
Former Democrat MP gets jail for appropriating state land

BANGKOK: -- The Criminal Court on Tuesday sentenced a former Democrat MP and his wife to 17 years in jail for appropriating and possessing state land in Kanchanaburi province without permission.

However the punishment was reduced by one third to 10 years and 16 months after both defendants gave useful information concerning the case.

The Court said Pracha Pohtipipit, a former MP for Kanchanaburi, better known as Kamnan Sia and his wife; Kemmaporn Tangjaiyen, encroached on the 50rai of state land between November 29, 2001 and February 8, 2002, erecting workers' shelters and livestock barns to claim ownership.

After listening to many witnesses and examining related documents, the court found both defendants guilty as charged.

Good they have been dealt with, now for the other former Dem MP now a fake monk, that is quite infamous with his well known land deals, then you might see a few Reds coming out with cheers, But we know that's not gunna happen huh......whistling.gif

Justice is being seen to be done irrespective of political allegiance it seems.

"it seems" being the operative words ... I will assume that the only reason this has gone so far is cos he upset the "wrong" people rather than because of right/wrong/truth/justice ... I wonder if he will appeal, and then quietly get let out on bail with a 2,000 baht fine (reduced down to zero jail time and minimal financial penalties cos he "cooperated") as seems to happen far too often here ...

Of course you will assume. Mind you, with that assumption it would seem unlikely he would get off so lightly as you wonder about.

Oh by the way, I assume the chap was just guilty as charged.

Oh no, not impartial administration of justice! What will the red apologists moan about now?

Oh yeah, "rights".

and no reconciliation.

But that's what we expect from the protectors of democracy.

They should be out on bail by now, even with little or no grounds for appeal, they will be able to drag this through 3 levels of court and stretch out the proceedings to somewhere in the neighbourhood of 15 to 20 years, by which time they will be far to old to incarcerate, or will already be living in another country.

doesnt matter who is corrupt as long as they get done for it. Great to see the courts both husband and wife here as they are both guilty, hopefully they will get tp spend the time there as well and not out on endless appeals. Wonder how long before we see more and more politicians jailed, doesnt matter which side they are on either.

"However the punishment was reduced by one third to 10 years and 16 months "

Erm......

Standard practice my friend.

Don't you think that 10 years is quite a long while to be spent behind bars.

It could have been better expressed as 11 years and 4 months. But at least the math is right.

ah those nice thai politicians

i tought they were allowed to steal

but never go over a certain amount

that is why thaksin got shot down, he was starting to get too rich for the old elite yellow shirts

A bit too simplistic. More likely not being in a sharing mood may have been part of it. For some his business like approach, his business that is.

Of course, this former Dems MP has nothing to do with Thaksin, apart from corruption aspects maybe.

its from the nation so one auto assumes its "factually wrong"

however on the distant off chance that it isnt, what is more important land or lives? obviously by this judgment in thailand, land is far more important.

"The land of Thailand belongs to all the Thais," from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thai_National_Anthem

must be a miss translation

also from there "No tyrant can their freedoms take away"

Yes where are all the reds not.. impartial courts and such.

Happy that this guy got caught and sentenced. I hope he cant appeal and finally has to go to jail.

Defendents were previously found guilty, now get their sentences. The Junta has the authority under Article 44 of the Interim Charter to reverse court decisions for the sake of national security. But with this case having no connections with the Junta's "reforms" and no political implications going forward, the court is left to its own. Big deal.

Any reason is a good reason to be negative?

If obviously the courts are not to be trusted, shall we just arrange firing squads at dawn? Much easier.
