Texas executes man for police officer's 2002 shooting death
MICHAEL GRACZYK, Associated Press

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Texas prison officials have executed a man for a Dallas-area police officer's slaying during a 2002 shootout that followed a convenience store customer's killing.

Kent Sprouse became the fifth convicted killer put to death this year in Texas when he was given a lethal injection Thursday evening.

The U.S. Supreme Court refused to review his case in November and no last-day appeals were filed in the courts.

The 42-year-old Boone County, Missouri, native was condemned for the October 2002 killing of 28-year-old Ferris police officer Marty Steinfeldt. The officer was responding to a 911 call about a customer being shot while pumping gas at the store.

Ferris is about 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of Dallas.

Eye for an eye, Texas style.

No mention that the officer was white as was the perp. That doesn't sell papers. No mention that the perp was a meth user, under the influence at the time.

No mention that the perp had already shot someone at the gas station and that the officer was responding to a call for help but was shot and killed on arrival. No mention that the officer was very brave to drive into that situation.

No mention that the officer was only 28 and left a young wife who was pregnant with their first child.

No mention that Marty was a US Army veteran.

RIP Marty Steinfeldt and condolences to your wife and now child.

Officer survived a tour of duty in the armed forces, only to be shot on home soil by a scumbag.

Officer never had the chance to see his unborn child.

Good news

Another great day in the Lone Star state. They should keep up the good work at a faster rate.

Indeed a very sad incident which was quite unwarranted.

Justice had been served, but the loss for the family will last for a long time.

RIP
