BANGKOK: -- PRIVY COUNCIL President Prem Tinsulanonda yesterday expressed his wish that the government of General Prayut Chan-o-cha would help unite the country to ensure peace, stability and wealth.

"My wish is for the prime minister to restore peace and order in the country," Prem said.

He was speaking to a large group of Cabinet members and military leaders, led by Prayut, who gathered to wish him a happy Songkran and seek blessings from him on the occasion of the traditional Thai New Year.

Prem wished them good health and happiness.

He said he expected them to retain a strong determination in maintaining progress and peace for the country. He also said the virtue of Their Majesties the King and the Queen should help protect them from any perils.

He said the prime minister and his Cabinet were doing "very difficult and tiring work" of running the country.

"Everyone wants to rely on the prime minister for the country to move forward and remain peaceful. And we want to see the people's wishes granted," he said.

Prem, a former Army chief and ex-prime minister, also said he wished people with ill intentions towards Thailand would not to succeed in causing trouble.

Prayut and others met with Prem at about 4pm.

Among them were Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Tanasak Patimapagorn, Deputy PM Wissanu Krea-ngam, Deputy Prime Minister MR Pridiyathorn Devakula, Interior Minister Anupong Paochinda, and Transport Minister Prajin Juntong.
