I've bought a large hardcase suitcase to take my computer back to Canada from Bkk. I haven't even opened my desktop since I got it a few years ago, what do I need to take in my carry on, and what can be left in the case for check in?

How much time approximately would it take to disemble, and do I need any particular screw drivers for that?

Thanks!

They ship to the store in a cardboard box with a layer of styrofoam around them. If you can pack it so it's tight and won't rattle around, but padded it should be fine.

If the case is broken or dented they are pretty cheap and it's pretty simple to switch all of the parts into a new case. I pay about US$30 for a new case and could swap the actual "computer" into it in less than an hour. Nothing would be lost in the process in terms of software or other data.

The only time I've ever had one damaged, the plastic front got shattered and the "real" computer inside just got a new case. I'd just go for it.

Its a larger than normal aluminum Lian Li case, so you recommend not bothering to dissemble it, but how about opening it and packing clothes or towels in among the components? I can't imagine it surviving being thrown around very much, no matter how well its packed...it has to change two planes en route to Victoria, Canada. Flying China Southern Airlines, then AirCanada from Vancouver.

Thanks

I used to bring my desktop computer for short travel. I just hand carry my harddisks then stuff the interior with the towels ( or other buffering ) for loaded luggage. yeah, the casing is always replaceable. for long travelling, you may take some attention on following 3 items when shipping your computer :

HARDDISK - whatever spin or SSD

protect the information and applications, just in case. you may need simple screwdrivers, then label the cables and unplug them.

GRAPHIC CARD - or any PCI adaptor

the mechanical interface is relatively fragile in distant transportation. take a picture then uninstall it with simple screwdrivers.

CPU COOLER - if any

a massive cooling block on top of the CPU, if you have one. check the installation manual or the supplier website for uninstallation. this is a bit technical.
