Expert warns not to pose photos with tigers

BANGKOK: -- Wildlife expert cautions the people not to keep close to tigers for photography or pet them as they could turn aggressive.

The warning from the expert, deputy professor Sompojana Srikosamat of Mahidol University’s Faculty of Biology of the Department of Science, came as a tiger at the Tiger Temple attacked the temple abbot on Saturday amid the eyes of several local and foreign tourists.

But the temple later came out to dismiss the report as untrue, saying the abbot was injured after a misstep from a stairway.

But no matter what the temple would say, the wildlife expert said it was unsafe to pet on tigers or pose pictures with the tigers at close range.

He compared pet tiger to a big cat which is untamed no matter how good it was raised.

The big cat remains in itself its hunting instinct.

He said even though a pet tiger is fully fed to ease its hunger and lower its fierceness and becomes less aggressive, but in reality, the animal can be stimulated by surrounding environment.

Change of environment could create accumulation of stress in the animal and finally attack could be unpredictable.

He said tigers in nature like to spend most of their time alone, roaming in massive areas.

But posing pictures with tiger in close range at limited space could increase its accumulation of stress, he said.

He said as a large number of Thai people have acquainted with tigers, but knowledge of tigers remained limited, notably knowledge of its behaviour, relation between human and animal.

He then advised that the safest way is to try not to stay close to the tiger at any case even though its raiser will ensure it is tamed.

From yesterdays news:

>>The abbot of the Temple of Tigers or Wat Pa Luang Ta Bua in Kanchanaburi’s Saiyok district was badly injured when a tiger he was pulling along pawed his face and bit his right arm.
Luang Ta Jan, the abbot, needed to receive an operation that took about four hours to cure his wounds and broken arm.
Temple officials said the abbot was pulling along a male tiger, which is about seven or eight years, to walk with him at 1:30 pm when the tiger attacked him.<<
From this OP:
But the temple later came out to dismiss the report as untrue, saying the abbot was injured after a misstep from a stairway.
Someone is clearly lying!!

A few weeks ago, my first trip to Samui I did a Adventure Tour to view the Island.

Included in the trip was an opportunity to be photographed with a Tiger, glad I did not participate, unfortunately the tour started with a elephant ride and monkey show, did not know the elephant ride was optional when booking as not worth the extra money.

Must admit the elephants were good but have to think of the brutality it took to train them.

Hopefully someone was quick enough with their phone to make a video of the attack and will post it online.

Skywalker69 post #70 posted a photo of the bloody Abbot shortly after the attack while he is still on the ground. I don't see stairs in the photo. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/827492-abbot-of-tiger-temple-pawed-bitten-by-tiger/page-3

Absolute truth. Buddhist monks don't tell porkies.

Here's a photo of Bud abbott after his nasty fall down the stairs.whistling.gif

Could it be a case of?

Liar, Liar, Frocks On Fire !

Er...and before anyone accuses me of being rude by suggesting a "Frock" I should point out that, we often hear of Monks being "Defrocked" by Police so that indicates the Robes are in fact Frocks. ...Come to think of it, wonder what it is with the Cops and their penchant for "De-Frocking" these chaps?

And because the denial came from a temple source how many devotees will accept without question despite evidence to the contrary. Little wonder a revered institution is falling into disrepute.

common sense, tigers are not pets and should not be locked up. Get to close to them and they snap then you got know one to blame but yourself.

That's why they dope the animals to the gills for these 'photo ops' at the tiger zoos and parks. Keeps them docile and mellow.

Genius idea

I would like to add ...

Do not try to catch a rattle snake

Do not sleep in a cave with a family of hungry bears.

You are all welce for my advise

Don't tug on superman's cape

don't spit into the wind

don't pull the mask off the old lone ranger

And don't mess around with Jim!!!

We are all certainly in agreement here on TV, and all well aware that it is cruel and unsafe to keep wild animals, especially animals of prey, as pets.

It still bewilders how many people want to visit the Tiger Temple (foreigners and Thai people alike). Pointing out how awful the Tiger Temple is really needs to be done outside TV! We're just preaching to the choir here.
