Myanmar set to announce November 8 election date

Burma is expected to officially announce later today that this year’s general election will be held on November 8.

The poll was widely expected to take place in the last week of October or first week of November, but the exact date was not set.

The BBC’s Burma correspondent Jonah Fisher tweeted Wednesday that an election official had confirmed the November 8 date.

Myanmar 'sets historic general election date'

Myanmar will go to the polls on 8 November in its first contested general election in 25 years, a senior election official has told the BBC.

The official said the date would be formally announced later on Wednesday.

Reform has been under way since 2010 when military rule was replaced by a military-backed civilian government.
