Flax seed

Featured Replies

Today I picked up a bag of flax seed at Villa Market and this weekend I'll be getting a small coffee grinder. So, my question is, once I have ground up a supply how much would be considered a daily dose? I usually have a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast so I thought I would sprinkle the ground flax seed on the oatmeal.

Two tablespoons a day should be plenty.

Make sure you eat the ground flaxseeds within half an hour otherwise they go rancid. So you only grind what you are going to eat straight away.

You should store them in the fridge or a dark cool place.

I mix them with cottage cheese and cold pressed flaxseed oil and add fruit, almonds and cinnamon.

I take 2 heaped teaspoons in a small tub of plain yoghurt after dinner every night. I am as regular as clockwork the following morning smile.png

Why grind them and not use them whole?

The outer skin (seed coat) is strong enough to resist stomach acids and will simply pass through without being digested. Most seeds need to be ground, or at least cracked to let digestive juices at the inner areas of the seed.

I have bought ground flaxseed for years, keep it in the refer or freezer and dump a heaping tablespoon on my oatmeal each day. I have stored it for months at a time and have never had it go rapid.

That would be rancid, not rapid.

All processed flax seed containers in the west say 1 TABLESPOON in 250 ml/1 cup water or fruit juice with another cup of water taken straight after in order too wash down any residue. That is the limit or there tends to be a build up in the body which can cause constipation. Never take dry as it cannot be swallowed and is difficult to wash away afterwards. Can be used in baking, taken with cereals, drinks, etc, but only once a day.
