czech123
Hi Goldie09. I was living in Pattaya for 3 years; however now back in Europe for a while (I'll be back November 2016). Never heard of any groups, sorry!!.....I can tell you some things I found out though. 1. You can buy insulin over the counter at the pharmacy.... 2. You can not get insured due to any preexisting illnesses! One reason why I went back home.....I got insured for 20,000 Baht for a years cover in Thailand (You have to buy your own insulin, test strips and needles in Thailand).....And that's bloody cheap, even compared to a healthy persons insurance in Thailand. 3. Most food (Street stalls) in Thailand has sugar added....be careful! Even if you say no sugar, they like to add it anyway....just because they want the food to taste good.....in their opinion :-) 4. Don't go to the Government hospital for a blood check up.....you'll wait forever to be seen! Hundreds of patients....I left :-) Go to a private hospital.... Goldie09
Thank you for your replies. A hospital in Bangkok, Theptarin, was referred and a visit to them successful. They are the Thai Diabetic Association And very helpful. Will check other links, thanks and take into account the comments on eating out which I believe are correct. Thanks again. phutoie2
I believe Pattaya is full of 7/11s, stay out of them. Well apart from selling some very dark chocolate the rest of the stuff is a diabetics nightmare.
Goldie09
Yes, very much agree. Impossible to get any non sugar drink that is not water and the food is terrible. Thanks for highlighting that. Goldie09
To clarify, some information from their website; Diabetes & Thyroid Center at Theptarin Hospital is the first comprehensive diabetes center in Thailand offering team-approach care (doctor, diabetes educator, dietitian, foot care specialist, and patient). With over 30 years of experience caring for diabetes patients, the center is widely accepted both in terms of quality and academic standard throughout Thailand, Southeast Asia, and beyond. There were references to the Thai Diabeties Association on the wall so I presume there is a connection. Some more useful information; There is a Thai Association . The website is in Thai. There is a reference made to and link to The International Diabetes Federation( IDF) on their site but the IDF site does not mention Thailand on SEA member page. but does state member since 1970 so not sure of status. Either way, a good source of information to compliment Others. Thanks for all the info and replies. Edited July 12, 2015 by Goldie09
