Thailand and Myanmar sign visa exemption agreement

BANGKOK: -- Thailand and Myanmar yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding to exempt visas for citizens of both countries who travel on planes.

The agreement was signed by Thai Foreign Minister Gen Tanasak Patimapagorn and Myanmar Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin in Chiang Mai’s Shangri-La hotel as Asean will turn a single economic community next year.

Under the agreement signed, citizens who enter the two countries by planes and holding normal passports will be allowed to stay 14 days without visas.

Myanmar opens three airports for entry by Thai travellers without visas. They are Naypyidaw, Mandalay and Yangon.

For Thailand, it has a total of 23 international airports.

Currently seven airlines operate flights between the two countries.

For citizens who travel on other transportation modes, the two countries will consider again after finishing assessment of air travels by both citizens.

The exemption of visas will become the effective August 11.

Thailand has already signed visa exemption agreements with eight countries in Asean.
Myanmar is the latest country in the agreement.

Visa exemption with other eight Asean countries are as follow;

1. Brunei – 14 days.

2. Cambodia – 14 days.

3. Indonesia – 30 days.

4. Laos – 30 days.

5. Malaysia – 30 days.

6. The Philippines – 30 days.

7. Singapore – 30 days.

8. Vietnam – 30 days.
