TIP REPORT
US will not penalise Thailand: Minister

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Deputy Commerce Minister Apiradee Tantraporn expressed her confidence Wednesday that the United States would not come up with any penalties against Thailand though the country remained in the bottom of the latest Trafficking in Persons report.

She said that though Thailand remains in Tier 3, the US government has acknowledged that Thailand has continually tackled human trafficking activities.

Several months before the report was released, the government has enforced a number of measures, she added. Thailand should turn the crisis into opportunities, by speeding up other measures to clear the long-standing problems.

Penalties for countries in Tier 3 are at the discretion of the US President. It could include ban on the countries’ products or restrictions on non-humanitarian assistance and funding.

Maybe the US Gov't should also look at the penalties which maybe handed out to said and recently detained perpetrators of such crimes by Thai courts.

What penalties? I am unaware of any given other than movements to inactive posts and small monetary fees. Enlighten me

No dear if the US had then Thailand wouldnt be on tier 3, they have acknowledged Thailand isnt doing anywhere near enough and has a long way to go before coming up to expected standards.

Another stupid Thai attempt to turn a slap in the face into a pat on the head...Thailand has already been penalised and kept on tier 3, moron

Show me a link instead of insults that tell of lengthy prison sentences that were not actually carried out. Or maybe you have a link to show more than petty fines were paid? Maybe you can show were police or gov officials were fired or imprisoned instead of moved to inactive posts? Come on now. Surely you can back up your insult with proof

I don't believe anybody has been convicted yet, just arrested and in jail. Money has been confiscated. But this is only the tip of the iceberg, as everybody knows.

Since the Junta has indicated it will remain in control of the nation through 2016 with elections possibly in 2017, the USA might impose some limited sanctions to maintain pressure on the government to follow through with CONVICTIONS, PROACTIVELY shutdown human trafficking organizations and CEASE punishing anti-trafficking groups.

Such action by the USA would be especially consistent with EU views of inadequate Thailand anti-trafficking efforts if the EU "red cards" Thai seafood this year.
