BANGKOK — The owner of a hotel in northeastern Thailand filed a libel complaint today against a celebrity singer for claiming the hotel is haunted.

A lawyer for the LJ the Emerald Hotel in Amnat Charoen province filed a complaint today with the technology crime division in Bangkok, alleging country singer Chanatcha Wongsawasdikul damaged the hotel’s reputation by posting online about ghost sightings at the hotel.

“This is not true, because the LJ the Emerald Hotel is a five-star hotel and has a great reputation in Amnat Charoen,” Chartchai said. “It has also won awards in the past.”

Chartchai said that Chanatcha, better known as “Kandy Rakkaen,” recently posted messages saying that the hotel was substandard and haunted by ghosts. No such posts can currently be found on her Facebook page.

The post has caused great damage to the hotel’s business, the lawyer said, and his client demands the singer pay nearly 1 million baht in damages.

Ghost sitings is kind of a draw for lots of people...the marketing of such is evidenced all over cable tv programming of ghost hunter types shows with interviews of owners and wmployees proudly telling stories with names and locations of said hotels.

So that means if you have awards and you are a 5-star hotel, you cannot have any ghosts? Hmm try to tell that to Castle Leslie in Ireland, Langham Hotel in London or Rosewood in Dallas- just to name a few.

True. But they ain't Thai. I know loads of Thai folk that would give any hotel a very wide miss if it had any link to ghosts. This is Issan we are talking about so you are not going to be replacing locals with ghost hunting tourists. True or not it will still have an impact on business.

When I worked in hospitality we had a young Chinese woman who insisted on changing rooms not once bit twice because she claimed the rooms were haunted. Felt like I was in a scene from the bloody Shining.

How the hell are they going to prove he didn't see a ghost?? How can this go to court. Only in Thailand. 555

And how does it being a 5 star hotel and winning awards got to do with it! How would the ghost know that. Big chief ghost to apprentice ghost. When you go haunting tonight only 2 star hotels with no awards and reputation must be occupied !!

I bet the ghost sightings are more truthful than the claim to be a five-star hotel.

OMG ! I just clicked "LIKE" along with a few others.... NOW they'll want to SUE us too as part of a "Thai Class Action" against

the Cynical Ferangs.

Well according to agoda it's a 3 star hotel. And they would have uploaded the information. I see a room for 12 dollars. A bargain and a half.

Management has been possessed to a point where they are seeing two additional stars?

Well, it is true that no 5 star hotel has a ghost. Of course, it's also true for every other hotel.

Got crappy service and or was slighted in some way and how better to get revenge ...

Good luck proving that in court.............

A good insight into the Thai mentality. The spite from someone who feels face has been lost and the lengths they will go to for revenge is amazing sometimes.

Thai slander and defamation laws aren't concerned with truth or falsehood - they are concerned with the intent to defame.

Kandy should have known that. She will soon.
