Students with pierced ears, visible tattoos to be barred from vocational schools

Back in the "good ol' days" when I was in management and had the responsibility of up to 300 staff, part of my job description was the hiring and firing of employees. I would NEVER employ staff with visible tattoos or body piercings. Why, you may ask? Well, besides being hideous to a large percentage of people (other staff and customers), it degraded the image of the organisation. Company policy was to allow body piercing, provided any visible would be removed during working hours. A maximum of 2 ear rings/studs was allowed. Initially, I hired 1 or 2 staff according to this policy to my regret. They continually "forgot" to remove the jewelry and it quickly became a nightmare to police at work. Subsequently, these people were subject to the 3 strikes rule and eventually had to find new employment elsewhere. Also, during their term of employment they had encouraged other staff members to get piercings, thus compounding the problem.

I still believe significant body piercings and tattoos limit employment opportunities. A neat appearance will appeal to almost 100% of employers, whereas someone who attends an interview with a nose ring, lip ring, a tongue stud and arms covered in tattoos is unlikely to get a second interview, regardless of their qualifications.

While you have good factual grounds for your opinion and I can't disagree with your logic, the topic of whether people with piercings and tattoos should be denied educational rights based on personal preference is the question. Discouraged yes, but denied is too authoritarian and further ghettoizes those who have severely handicapped themselves already.

And that's what the proposal is, to discourage.

The students with Tatoos CAN take evening classes.

Yes but I do not believe discouragement and discrimination share the same meaning

As has been mentioned many times before and in the original OP , NO ONE IS BANNED FROM LEARNING!!

They are just being separated. All the "welders and mechanics" can just go to night school instead. Why TVF posters feel the need to defend these young kids with tattoos all over and rubber bungs in their ears is beyond me.I'm also sure if one of them turned up to date your 16 year old daughter you wouldn't be so magnanimous.

Like you I absolutely hate the look but our personal preference is not the point. It is not up to you or me to decide what someone else does to their own body. It is theirs alone to decide to make their own "fashionable" mistakes. Separation means the same as segregation and only if they are disruptive (tats or not) should they be segregated. Night? Day? What is that about? is that so they are more hidden at night?

Why not just segregate these "coloured skins" entirely ? facepalm.gif

Your a dinosaur like these imbeciles making these stupid rules, dont let your halo slip on that barstool

This is no different than segregating any other group because of a visual difference ... discrimination at its finest and worst... amazing how many here still support what is effectively the same attitude as racism, sexism and all other discrimination of groups in society... its why half of them are here and not back home. coffee1.gif

I find it interesting the number of posters that either missed or are ignoring the qualifier "large ear-piercings and visable tattoos" and are basing their arguments on a different level of body modification. Whether you agree or not, tats will affect the type of jobs available to you.

The person getting a tattoo or piercing knows full well it may lower job opportunities.

It should be up to him, it's their choice and they shouldn't have the educational opportunity taken away.

These people are going to be motorbike mechanics and plumbers. Who cares if they get tattoos?

Yes of course. Absolutely no University educated or successful people in the world have tattoos or piercings only the lower class riff raff and criminals. 555 you old farts are really starting to show your age but your archaic prejudices

Starky,

You might find to your dismay that the old farts are the ones doing the hiring (and firing) these days.

And don't forget that the old farts now were the real rebels in the 1960's who changed the world to allow you to have the right to call them old farts.

If it wasn't for them you would still be a citizen with short back and sides conforming as the Government requires you to.

Muddy,

We aren't talking about employment though are we. We are talking about people's basic right to education. My apologies I hadn't realised I was in the presence of a REAL rebel. I don't think everyone in the 60's was a real rebel I would say majority weren't.Squarehead conformist would be closed to the truth. Having long hair and tripping out on Haight Ashbury isn't rebellion man. Thank the Lord that you were around though to pave the way for the liberal non racist, bigoted, sexist or in any way prejuidiced world we live in today. Kudos man peace

Pornthip Rojanasunand is the leading forensic pathologist in Thailand and recognised globally for her expertise......... Look at her dress code. A self confessed 'hippy' and an admirer of the 'punk culture'. Doesn't that prove a point as well as the ridiculous verbals of a so called person in authority without a brain. Throw these 'authoritarians' onto a pyre and let Thailand go forward with people with brains.

And what if your too stupid to use the word "you're" and "your" correctly Einstein?

After chastising a poster for using your and you're incorrectly you go and do it Hlover. Ironic, isn't it?
Yes, ironic and moronic - perfect for this forum. Edited by HLover

We were all young once & it was our duty as human to find our or create our identities.

Our often gullible & easily influenced teenage group need a wake up call, this is a policy is good start.

At least it's something to make them stop & think about their future with a career, a wife, a family, grandkids and comfortable self image.

Wake the #$@&! up you students, tatt's are just a cheap & nasty fashion, like flare jeans, fat ties, stack heel shoes, or Justin Beiber CD's,

Please think about health & safety for a moment. Tattoo inks fade. all bright colors become darker, blurrier and yuckier the longer you live,

outlasting any commercial paint or ink in your house or factory. What the hell is in that ink? Would you wear the same printed Tshirt till you got old & died?

Think- It's on you forever, Those same stupid pictures that you should have just put in a frame on the wall till you got bored with it,

You could at least have changed your mind and taken them down with the moth eaten Death Metal Posters.

If tatts lasted for only a few years and were harmless and removable for the sake of fun & fashion I'd say have fun & see,

but if most tattooed people please were to think for a moment that

those inks are somewhat radio active & highly carncengenic, and may contain GMO's, Mercury & nano-bot technology like many vaccines for the military, and so for the rest of your life- your poor body is going to be trying dealing with what it sees as inflammation, requiring good nutritional solutions, just to get by.

And your poor family doesn't want to see you in a swimsuit ever again.

Hey young people please wake up, and give yourselves another 10 years before you decide to do anything that will be with you for life.

I bet you won't get them done when you've had time to think.

Think- Fashion is not forever, & neither will be the name of your lover,

Be warned; that you WILL ONE DAY grow to hate those tattoos, regret your reckless actions, pray for a solution,

Pray for a clean slate while you watch your self esteem shrivel away like that dark blue black blob

that doesn't look anything like that big bad colorful idea you had 20 years ago.

We all have our right to our opinions, I know I'm going to really piss off some people, for that I'm sorry,

But I hope this blog will do more to save a young students future,

than to piss off others that not enjoying my frank & honest perspective I think is worth sharing.

You may think I'm old school & not cool, but

as a body artist in my 50's having created thousands of live artworks over 35 years,

I have to speak up, for the shy and downtrodden,

90%+ of people with Tatts my age wish the did not have them, and would desperately love to have them removed if it wasn't so painful & ugly.

I have seen too much pain & anger, violence & misunderstanding all associated with tattoo's they can be bad karma,

Wake up please!!!!! - they are going to only get uglier & look even more stupid, FOREVER!

Be wise be well.

First of all, I personal do not like Tattoos, but. this issue, mirrors the strange attitute of the government.

Knowledge is not important, as long students appear clear.

Looks good must be good.....

This is no different from saying.

You are fat, therefore you cannot enter the cafeteria at certain times.

You are poor, therefore you cannot mix with the rich kids.

You are black, therefore you cannot go to certain schools.

You are white, therefore you cannot study hip hop.

You are Muslim, therefore you cannot study in a budhist school.

The list goes on ,of excuses the private education can give to stop a person from learning or teaching.

The ministry of private education needs a crash course in the laws that are well above them. Namely, the constitutional right to learn and academic freedoms. National education madra 24 ( 6 ), among dozens of other education protection laws.

I hope these kids March right on down to the constitutional court and file a complaint against opec for interfering in a persons right to equal education.

Greenchair, I can agree on what you list as excuses, but don't forget there is no constitution in Thailand or any other law you or they can rely on.

I'm no fan of tattoos, but this policy is completely misguided. While I'm sure that tattoos are correlated with a delinquency to some extent, that is not sufficient reason to bar someone from an education. There are social categories (ethnicities, cultures, economic levels, etc.) in all countries for which the rate of delinquency is higher than average, and we don't discriminate on that basis.

But the worse part of this is that they have just closed another door to a group of young people whose options were already rather limited. Having lost the opportunity for an education because of an ill-considered tattoo on a visible part of their body, I can see more of these young people entering a life of crime that would have otherwise not been in the cards. The law of unintended consequences at work again....

Again if you read the OP they are not barring anyone from an education, just barring them from the mainstream classes were they have obviously been a problem. They can still enrol in the evening classes!

"They" have been a problem? "They"? You mean all the tattooed, ear-pierced students? Babies and bathwater. Look, the problem is simple ... if a student--any student--becomes disruptive, expel them, tattoos or not. "They" will get the message in short order.

Ditto all this. Cannot see the point at all. Permanent ID markings. What happens when the fashion changes as it always does?

I don't get it. Never have. I advised my god daughter not to do it when she wanted my opinion. No one else in my family ever thought of doing anything so stupid. It would be good to hear from someone who has regretted it.

You are absolutely correct.

But they also should not be DENIED rights as well because of cosmetic appearances if they are not disruptive to other students learning.

Authoritarianism and it's demand for obedience, and bigotry with it's demands for judgement are being challenged as the primary social and cultural values guiding education and government. Admittedly, slowly here in the east. Authoritarian regimes such as China, Myanmar, the taliban and N Korea et al are under pressure to evolve and there is great resistance to it. But progress is possible such as with Japan and S. Korea. So, what values are emerging? Critical thinking skills, innovative and creative thinking outside the box, self expression rather than mindless conformity, teamwork and egalitarian structures. But no one is suggesting that these in any way replace the knowledge and skill sets required to do the jobs. Enforced comformity and it's mind numbing efffects are no longer effective in a rapidly changing and competitive world. Leading edge companies increasing look for innovative leaders. This pathetic attempt to assert authoritarian control for it's own sake and impose a military model for civil society is backward looking and doomed to fail....

I see a lot of monks with tattoos. How about that? Remove them from the temple?

Can those religious tattoos be covered so as to not be "visible"?

The tattoos are not always religious. And they can not always be covered by their monk's habit.

Off course they aren't. It's the nature of Thai Buddhism with 2 week monks etc!

Well then, in that case they should say "Get ye from the tabernacle" !
