Would be the same in trying to sell pork in a Jewish area as well.

What did they expect ? A welcoming committee.

Sad they where gunned down but then look at the area> Muslims?

Notice that conflict on a global scale is in Muslim areas Not in too many christian or Buddhist areas.

Still have not figured out what is it that Muslims want except to make Jihad and kill .

Where is the outrage from the Muslim community? Why are they not gathering a militia to fight against this criminal activity born out of their own neighborhoods?

Passive compliance is a sign of acceptance of this criminal behavior...you all should be so proud of your legacy of death and destruction...

There can be no cause that can justify the callous and cowardly murder of innocent people of all ages...

I'm guessing they sold all types of meat and going on their ages have been for many years.. If Muslims don't want pork then don't buy it, don't kill the vendors just shop elsewhere.

I think the vast majority of Muslims actually just want to get on with their lives WITHOUT these religious nut jobs, probably the same as most people living in the Westboro area, Topeka, USA!

What most "ordinary" Muslims want is the same as what most "ordinary" Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, you name it, want in the modern, materialistic world.

They will have been born into a religion, and will go along with it, taking part in the rituals (including, but not confined to, birth, marriage and death) without really caring or thinking about it.

They will spend most of their time working to pay for their families. When they're not working they want to watch TV (sport, soap operas, game shows, crime dramas - that sort of thing) Some of them don't like to sit around "doing nothing" in their leisure time and will actually partake in sport. Others have hobbies such as stamp collecting, fishing, snail-racing or model making. Some of them like to do voluntary stuff. Some of them like to hang out in coffee shops, in the village centre or around the sports fields where the "active" ones are doing their thing.

What they don't want to do is spend their time thinking about that old stuff they were taught about as a kid or forcing other people to think about that old stuff they were taught as a kid.

Things are pretty much the same around the world. (Sorry if this all sounds a bit dull)

But then along come the ones that aren't ordinary. They're really into that old stuff. We call them "extremists". I've never met any extremists so I can't tell you want they want, but I can tell what they do. They tell the "moderates" (the ordinary ones) that they have to join them, or help them, or look the other way, or...........die.

It's no good going to the "authorities" for help or protection, because for the most part they live in countries where the authorities are corrupt, ineffectual or may even be extremist themselves.

Easy choice to make isn't it?

  • 4 months later...

Obvious responses would be (and maybe some are being done already)

1. Surveillance: Monitor all preaching in mosques

2. Separation: Send three deep south provinces on their own with a statement something like: "It is time to go your own way. We will withdraw all the infrastructure we have built. And if you so much as raise a finger against Thailand, we will attack in retaliation for our own protection."

3. Immigration: No more Muslim immigration to Thailand

4. Tourism: Monitor all Muslim tourists and others visiting from Muslim nations

5. Education: Public education events in order to discern the differences between Islam and Buddhism - its founder's life, its scriptures and doctrines as found in the Koran, Hadith and Sira, its history and current situation.

The reason Buddhist culture and nations were destroyed in Pakistan, Afghanistan etc is that Buddhist nations didn't look Islam squarely in the face and combat it as became necessary.

No more ostriches.

While I do not approve of many of their tactics (e.g. violence and coercion) perhaps Thailand needs something more like Burma's militancy, better from non-monks of course.
