Ministry of Transport has not approved an increase in taxi fares

BANGKOK, 19 October 2015 (NNT)- A meeting has been held by the Ministry of Transport and related authorities on ways to improve the taxi service at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Following the meeting, Deputy Transport Minister Omsin Cheewapreuk revealed that taxis have to spend about 80 minutes in the queue to receive passengers, allowing them to make only four trips per day. The meeting has assigned Airports of Thailand (AOT) the task of determining ways to help taxi drivers decrease their waiting period to about 40-60 minutes instead. The move would enable taxi drivers to increase the number of trips to the airport by one to two trips. AOT is set to deliver the results of its study to related authorities within a three month period.

The deputy transport minister also mentioned that the meeting did not touch on the taxi driversโ€™ request to increase the taxi airport fee from 50 baht to 75 baht for regular taxis and to 95 baht for taxi vans. He stated that further consideration is needed on the issue, as a price adjustment would also have to implemented at Don Mueang airport, as currently there is a shortage of taxis at that airport.

In regards to a price increase for regular taxis on the road, he said that that decision will be made by the end of this year.

It is about time. The fare has not changed for over a decade. These men and woman work long hours and earn little money. Many of these taxies are on a lease basis, and the leas must be paid no matter on what they earn.

Don't give them a raise unless they stop this not wanting to take passengers. This was the agreement with the taxis and the Ministry of Transportation but yet today 2 taxi refuse trips and 3 last week.

Something is not quite right with the waiting time stats. TAT has been announcing ever increasing of tourists arriving at Swampy and the taxis have to wait 80 minutes to pick up passengers. AOT should have more taxi pickup points to cut down the waiting time.

They rose last year. Quite a considerable rise too, for long distance fares.

The most recent increase was actually a couple of months ago, 8%?

Guess why there are so many taxis and why so many Thais aspire to being taxi drivers? It's not because of the "little money" that they earn, I assure you.

The fare changed at the end of last year; you obviously missed the announcement. Does that also mean you don't utilise the taxis, hence neither contributing to their income nor dealing with the all too common hassles of using a taxi here? (Though things have improved of late, but not to the extent necessary to be considered wholly acceptable). Or is it that you are always satisfied with the service?

I think the general fare should be cut by 25%....way too many taxis.

But there should be surcharges. Say 10% more 8-10 PM

30 % 10-12

100 % 12-4AM

30 % 4-6 AM

And they should be given free access to the highways (or pay for it with a special tax).

I agree with your idea in theory.....but this is Thailand, so you would end up with a thousand taxis competing from midnight, and none to be found during normal working hours.

OK, than it would be needed to reduce the surcharge till a balance exists.

The problem I see is that it makes it easier to manipulate/cheat.

No increase for taxis??? OK

Then do not dare give the the very big wealthy companies that own the Tollways an increase either.

They have had nearly 100% increases in some areas in last 2 years.

The rich get richer & the poor stay poor

If the waitingtime is too long then there are too many taxi's or too few tourists.

But they're free to go elsewhere aren't they?

I see them everywhere driving 40-50 km/hr where the limit is 80. And since i drive motobike i have to stay behind them all the time?
