What is the situation like today ? i could add that I have bought Laos visas two times recently. First time I payed 2.000, the second time 1500. Both in the Mukhdahan / Sawannakhet crossing. On weekends and after normal working hours they will charge an overtime fee of $1. In baht it is often 100 baht. You need to have the correct amount or they may make it difficult. When I did my first crossing back in 2002 I think it was the same. If they refuse at the border hide your Thai baht and tell them all you have is 1000 baht or $35 American dollars.
