PHUKET: -- The deputy mayor of Tambon Karon of Muang district of Phuket says a huge amount of trash on the seafloor at Karon beach was either thrown overboard from fishing boats, passenger boats and not from business operators on the beach.

Comment from the deputy mayor Mr Ithiporn Sangkaeo came as a 1.09 minute video clip posted on Facebook by a diver, Visit Chounchit, showing huge amount of thrash, which included bottles, cans, plastic bags, pipes, woods, robes, at the bottom of the sea in front of Karon beach in Phuket, was widely shared on the social network.

At the end of the clip, he displayed a sign which reads “The seabed is now full with thrash at Karon beach.”

The clip drew widespread share with many blaming business operators on the Karon beach for dumping these trashes into the bottom of the sea.

But Mr Ithiporn disagreed saying these garbage might have been either dumped by fishing and passenger boats or swept from other places to Karon beach, citing strong waves blown into the shore by northern winds.

They might not be originated from Karon beach itself, he said.

However he said he would mobilise team of divers from the private sector and the Tambon local administration to join in the collection of garbages at the bottom of the sea on December 3, as part of several activities to be held to celebrate His Majesty the King birthday anniversary on December 5.

There are not many beaches left without a garbage problem unfortunately. Thailand has a major garbage problem, just look at vacant lots in Bangkok that turned in dumps.

Why don't they arrest a few Cambodian fishermen and then declare the beaches are now trash free.

I'm sure the tourist will believe it and start coming back again. biggrin.png

Any further information on how the deputy mayor arrived at his conclusion ? And any more information on how we can help on the December "cleanup day" ?

I have never been to this beach but I suggest some of the rubbish would come from the canals flowing into or onto the beach. It is fair also to suggest that the tides brought garbage from other beaches around the Thailand area. Its also fair to suggest that rubbish on Karen beach was swept into the sea. It is not fair, not fair to suggest the rubbish did not come from Thailand,

With all the construction and huge hotels on the other side of the beach road in Karon , and Kata, it's a wonder there isn't even more trash !!!!!

Don't worry all the kids will be dragged out of school the beginning of Dec for them to half heartedly pick a few bits of rubbish up.

The one and only time I ever see a Thai picking up rubbish.
