BANGKOK: -- The pretty krathong floating in Bangkok’s waters yesterday are now just city waste.

Bangkokians floated 16.8 percent fewer krathong this year, good news for workers cleaning up after the Loy Krathong festival who finished their work this morning.

Bangkok Metropolitan Administration counted a total of 825,614 krathong picked up from the city's waterways this year, a significant drop from last year of 982,064 floats, according to the online announcement by Bangkok governor M.R. Sukhumbhand Paribatra.

While preserving the old Thai tradition, most city folks also showed they cared enough about being green and chose to float environment-friendly krathong.

Fewer foam made Krathongs used for Loy Krathong in Bangkok

BANGKOK: -- Bangkok people tend to buy environment-friendly "krathong" to float in the water in celebrating the Loy Krathong festival last night, according to Bangkok governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra this morning.

He said this trend came after Bangkok’s 50 district administrations began collecting the krathongs from waterways, canals, and river.

A total of 825,614 krathongs were collected, 754, 587 of which or 91.40% were made of perishable or environment friendly materials.

Only 71,027 krathongs or 8.60% were made of foam, a 10% decline from last year’s foam made krathongs, he said.

This showed that Bangkok people tended to buy krathongs made of natural materials, he said.

He admired the good cooperation offered by the people of Bangkok to reduce foam use during the festival to help protect environment.

That's a nice statistic however I truly don't believe it shows Bangkok people as a whole make a conscious decision to buy krathongs of natural materials.

Bangkokians have not progressed that much to consider the environment when making purchases. They are still too selfish, insufficiently educated, and governed by appearances rather than substance.

Harsh but true.

Loy Krathong used to be a "big thing" but as a sign of time i have seen that less Thais care about Loy Krathong now-a-days

never mind going green about it..... cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

What about all those krathongs made from bread that the fish like to eat? How do they count them?

Dodgy statistic with dubious method of measurement methinks.
