CDC to decide the composition of the Senate

BANGKOK, 27 November 2015 (NNT) - Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha will forward the government’s opinion on national reform to the National Reform Steering Assembly next week. He said the exposure of the opinion would help bring about the same understanding on the issue by the two bodies, and permit the reform to progress successfully by July 2017.

Meanwhile, Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC) Spokesperson Amorn Wanichwiwat said the CDC is still considering whether to follow a suggestion that the composition of appointed senators comprise people from all social stratas, rather than representatives from different occupations, as done in the previous constitution.

The new charter is said to include clauses that allow 200 Senate members chosen from as many social backgrounds as possible. The CDC and its sub-committee will also visit Songkhla from November 28th to 29th to survey public opinions regarding the constitution.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Prayut said the meeting of five rivers on November 25th was for him to be briefed on work progress made by the five bodies and to consider the National Council for Peace and Order’s 10 proposals.

But not by the body of the Thai electorate!

If such a common understanding occurs, the CDC ceases (if it were ever) to be an independent author of the draft constitution.
