Cambodia's Ministry of Labor on Saturday denied the rumors that the country's garment and footwear factories would be closed for a month and called on the public to cooperate with the authorities in order to bring the rumor-spreaders to justice.

In a statement, the Ministry of Labor said since Friday, a group of ill-intentioned people have spread the rumors that all garment and footwear factories in Cambodia would be shut down for one month in December.

"The rumors have caused concerns among both employees and employers in this industry,"the statement said.

"The Ministry of Labor absolutely rejects the rumors and announces that in December, besides the official public holiday (on the Human Rights Day), there will be no other holidays."

The statement also called on the public, particularly employees and employers, to cooperate with the authorities in order to arrest the rumor-spreaders for prosecution.

Garment and footwear sector, the kingdom's largest foreign currency earner, comprises nearly 1,100 factories with some 700,000 workers, according to government figures.

The sector exported products worth 3.3 billion U.S. dollars in the first half of 2015, accounting for about 80 percent of the country's total exports. (Cihan/Xinhua)
