Prison Watchdog Cancels Annual Visit

For the past 20 years on International Human Rights Day, representatives of rights group Licadho has gone into the Kingdom’s prisons to deliver food and to organize games and performances for inmates. This year, however, they will not do so “due to prohibitive written conditions set by the General Department of Prisons (GDP),” the group announced yesterday.

This is the second time this year that Licadho has canceled its prison activities in the 18 prisons the group monitors. The first time was in March when they scrapped International Women’s Day events.

“This year, restrictions imposed by the GDP have rendered Licadho’s special IHRD prison activities meaningless,” the group announced.
