Working Laos But House In Thailand

Featured Replies

wise heads and voices of the board.

i need some advice on my best options.

background:

married to a thai, who has just been given a temporary spouse visa to australia (hooray)

she lives in north eastern thailand and nong khai is the nearest border crossing.

potential situation:

it looks like i could be offered a position in Laos working in a remote locality, unsuitable for married living. (wife also has university to finish).

i would of course have a work permit for laos, and would work on either a 28 days in laos 10 days off, to be spent at the wifes house in thailand.

or the rotation would be 14 days on and 5 off, this rotation frequency would have to be negotiated if i obtain the position.

thai visa options:

the crux of my query, is what would the best visa option be for myself in your opinions ?

factors:

ease of interborder movement, cost at both nong khai and more permanent visa options if that is the best route.

thanks for your time

I would assume you will have a Lao visa if working there so there should not be any real cost involved. You enter Thailand on 30 day entry without visa and return in 5 or 10 days. So transportation is your cost. There is a bridge at Nong Khai so that makes it much better than the old boat crossings I used to make (very nasty this time of the year with logs flowing down and boat motors that tend to quite at the wrong time).

If you are in Oz and can obtain a multi entry non immigrant O visa for Thailand so much the better, as you would not have to worry about another change in entry without visa rules.

thank you for your reply lopburi.

yes i would have a laos visa, i just wondered if i would fall foul of the new laws in regards to the new visa rules.

because in a year i would make many crossings.

They say that days will be counted so you would not exceed the 90 days in six month limit.

thank you again lopburi, thats a relief to know about the rules a bit more.

only decision would now be personal choices.
