'Freaked out' Puchong 'can't petition govt'

BANGKOK: -- DEPUTY Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said yesterday that former Election Commission (EC) secretary-general Puchong Nutrawong cannot petition the government over the EC's decision to end his employment because the body is an independent agency.

Wissanu said independent agencies must follow the laws and legal procedures of independent agencies.

He said that if Puchong wanted to bring the matter to court, he might know what he had to do next.

Puchong said he wanted to seek justice from Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha because he believed his employment was terminated unfairly.

Prayut said he would accept the petition and look into it. He suggested that Puchong mention any irregularities in the petition if that were the case.

Puchong claimed that when the EC was preparing to print copies of the now-rejected charter draft for a referendum, there was a move to have only one printing house print the drafts.

Wissanu said he heard about the allegation two days ago.

He said that when he asked the EC which printing houses were being used, he was told there were several.

He said that although the EC was responsible for printing the charter drafts, the government must know the details, since it had to approve the budget for the purpose.

He said that as the charter drafts were not printed because the charter was rejected, the matter would not be investigated.

However, the government would have to discuss when the referendum would be held for the new charter draft.

EC chairman Supachai Somcharoen has threatened to sue Puchong if he defames him.

Supachai was one of the four EC members who voted not to pass Puchong in his annual evaluation.

Supachai denied the EC had interfered in the work of the EC office. "Puchong is freaked out because his employment is ended," he said.

He challenged Puchong to take the matter to the court, saying he carried out his duties in a transparent matter. "If superiors believe I harassed Puchong, I am ready to step down," he said.
