PHUKET: More than 20 members from the Phuket Farmers Association joined their counterparts nationwide to protest the controversial bill regulating genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

The protesters arrived at Provincial Hall on Wednesday (Dec 9) to hand to Phuket Vice Governor Chokdee Amornwat an official request for Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha to suspend the passing of the Biological Safety Bill until it has been properly amended.

The request asked for a committee, which would include farmers and GMO experts, to be formed.
The Office of the National Economic and Social Development Board and the Ministry of Commerce, among other government agencies, should be consulted in drafting the bill, the letter said.

Are they complaining about the proposal to regulate the use of GM crops that increases yield, profit and reduces the need for pesticide?

Whereas road safety kills and maims thousands. Corruption impedes development. Free speech oppresses initiative. Rampant nepotism promotes idleness. Protectionism kills competitiveness. Why aren't they up in arms about real issues?

You are showing your ignorance again. GMO's DO NOT increase yields, all they do is increase costs for the farmer.

As to your other point - they lead to massive INCREASES in herbicide use as they build in resistance to herbicides in the crops (that's the whole idea of them), so that they can be soaked in carcinogenic glycophosphate (roundup) with only the weeds being killed. This worked for a short time, until, as they scoffed at reports that stated that the weeds would build up resistance to roundup - guess what happened? they developed into 'super weeds' with resistance to roundup and approximately 60% of the US's farmland has 'super weeds' now which is a massive problem for the farmers as they cannot get rid of them as they crowd out the crops.

Serves the US right, they have a history of 'calling the wrong shots' and having things blow up in their face!! The farmers in Thailand must win the war against these 'frankenseeds' and ban them for good.

I would encourage anyone interested in this subject to check out Vandana Shiva for an informed, well experienced and learned take on gmo's.

While the farmers are at it, they should be calling for a review of the large amount of banned western agrochemicals being used here by many farmers - they're dropping like flies in the poorer farming communities - cancers and other health problems abound amongst people of all ages coming into contact with these poisons.

Poverty - global warming - water shortages - exhausted land.

These issues are all tied together and interlinked with these awful gmo's, and can all be addressed by the reintroduction of organic farming practices.

2015 Russia decided to stop the use of genetically modified food. Now Russia is able to become the largest world supplier of healthy, ecologically clean and high-quality food which the Western producers have long lost, especially given the fact that demand for such products in the world market is steadily growing. I think Russia will supply the world with healthy, organic food soon and I can only hope that Thailand will join them.

Rubbish

From the union of concerned scientists (USA)

For years the biotechnology industry has trumpeted that it will feed the world, promising that its genetically engineered crops will produce higher yields.

That promise has proven to be empty, according to Failure to Yield, a report by UCS expert Doug Gurian-Sherman released in March 2009. Despite 20 years of research and 13 years of commercialization, genetic engineering has failed to significantly increase U.S. crop yields.

Failure to Yield is the first report to closely evaluate the overall effect genetic engineering has had on crop yields in relation to other agricultural technologies. It reviewed two dozen academic studies of corn and soybeans, the two primary genetically engineered food and feed crops grown in the United States. Based on those studies, the UCS report concludes that genetically engineering herbicide-tolerant soybeans and herbicide-tolerant corn has not increased yields. Insect-resistant corn, meanwhile, has improved yields only marginally. The increase in yields for both crops over the last 13 years, the report finds, was largely due to traditional breeding or improvements in agricultural practices.

.......and from Environmental sciences Europe.

Results

Herbicide-resistant crop technology has led to a 239 million kilogram (527 million pound) increase in herbicide use in the United States between 1996 and 2011, while Bt crops have reduced insecticide applications by 56 million kilograms (123 million pounds). Overall, pesticide use increased by an estimated 183 million kgs (404 million pounds), or about 7%.

Conclusions

Contrary to often-repeated claims that today’s genetically-engineered crops have, and are reducing pesticide use, the spread of glyphosate-resistant weeds in herbicide-resistant weed management systems has brought about substantial increases in the number and volume of herbicides applied. If new genetically engineered forms of corn and soybeans tolerant of 2,4-D are approved, the volume of 2,4-D sprayed could drive herbicide usage upward by another approximate 50%. The magnitude of increases in herbicide use on herbicide-resistant hectares has dwarfed the reduction in insecticide use on Bt crops over the past 16 years, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

Clearly, you are the one spouting rubbish!!

So correct ! And glysophate weedkiller is now "enhanced" with a very carcinogenic substance as an answer t the weed resistance.

And being GMO does not provide crops with a farkin umbrella or raincoat. So those crops suck that <deleted> up as well. And the residuals are in what you eat! Do you ever get info on what they are or what they do to you?? GM Soya bean is in approx 50% of processed food .

GMO's have proved disasterous in the USA and Australia . Check out canola and cotton.

Genuine "organic" does NOT use such like chemicals. If found then to contain are not organic even if by accidental contamination. And that is getting difficult to avoid because water run off from long distances can deliver the unwanted on the way past .

GMO proponents have already tried to "outlaw" Heritage Seed " organizations in several countries. Try to work out the motive in that!

In Thailand I just wish I could find a tomato that tastes like a tomato!

Agree with everything you say, I don't eat processed foods as an even bigger danger to life is sugar - people don't realise that this poison is the largest factor in promoting cancer as well as heart, liver, kidney disease etc: tumours feed off of sugar and one of the easiest ways to defeat cancer is to starve it of (processed) sugar. I worked as a research chemist for 31 years before I retired to Thailand and I handled two highly carcinogenic chemicals in acrylonitrile, butadiene + styrene I suppose, as this is a suspected carcinogen. I can't deny, I was paranoid of getting cancer (particularly colon and stomach), but not any more!! I have viewed Ty Bollinger's two series on the internet about natural treatments for the prevention of and curing of cancer and have no fears now as I know how to prevent it (and if on the off hand I fall victim to it) how to cure it. If you know anyone with cancer (even stage 4 untreatable by standard treatments) then they stand a decent chance of saving their lives through watching/buying these two brilliant series, as I have done. They are a game changer, believe me, there must be 20 natural treatments that work, just to list a few, there is oxygen, several types of light, heat, pancreatic enzymes, clean electricity, sound, various herbs and spices, essential oils such as frankincense and myrrh NB: turmeric is excellent and is commonly known as the golden spice, so maybe the 3 wise men were sending a powerful message!! There is a common theme amongst the food/drink versions and that is that they boost the immune system, eliminate inflammation and detoxify the vital organs (especially the liver).

You don't have to take my word for it, watch one or 2 of either series and make up your own mind, it will blow you away!!

I forgot one very important cure and that is PH. Ty actually cured his own melanoma (skin cancer) with baking powder, I believe, whereby the cancer just fell off after a while from placing a poultice of baking powder onto his cancer.

Thais have been eating gm papaya, soy bean for 20 yrs.

The Phuket vegetarian festival for example has little to do with healthy eating. And everything to do with maximizing cash.

Take a look around at the unhealthy looking populous, the sedentary lifestyle., msg overdose at every restaurant. Prevalence of junk food outlets. Unregulated abuse and misuse of pesticide. Alcohol and drug abuse.

GM crops are the least of their questionable lifestyle issues. It's all about maximizing 'fun' raping the environment, greed and displaying your credit rating.

Health concerns, pfft, they're having a laugh.
