Gov’t Takes Oversight of Child Centers

The Social Affairs Ministry will take over responsibility for overseeing the management of all residential childcare centers to improve standards and protect children, Social Affairs Minister Vong Sauth said on Monday.

A new sub-decree designates the ministry as the entity responsible for conducting inspections of all centers, investigating and taking action on reports of irregularities and abuse, and establishing procedures for the closure of centers that do not comply with the minimum standards.

The move is also aimed at helping achieve the government’s aim of getting more children reintegrated into families and communities, he added. All unlicensed institutions will now have to register with the ministry.
