Large haul of tusks, pangolin scales expected to lead to arrests

Personally I think the tusks should be used to impale those involved in any way in this disgusting trade. Sit them right up there until they rot.

One of the saddest things I heard this year - perhaps ever - is that Chinese chemists are mixing Viagra (or the like) with the crushed ivory to boost efficacy and therefor it's reputation, raising the demand even higher.

Little chance this problem is going away, at least until the elephants are no more... sad.png

I despair for the future of our planet. Mankind has caused and is causing the extinction of countless species. The damage we do is evil and is permanent. It is humans who should be exterminated if our world is to continue as the beautiful place it once was. Elephants, tigers, turtles, rhinos....the list is endless that humanity is quickly destroying. We pollute our seas, our land, our air. Australia is destroying its Great Barrier Reef, China is poisoning itself, Indonesia is smoking out the world every year. Climate change is really occurring and all we do is fart around [no pun intended] and continue to poison and pollute and exterminate the only world we will ever have. The sooner we get another ebola/sars/AIDS/ malaria that wipes us out - the better.

Mankind is the ONLY species on Earth that can be described as EVIL.

The planet has survived for billions of years and will continue to do so. Various species die at the rate of 200 to 2000 per year (various theories). Don't despair for the planet. It will be fine when the humans are gone.

I take it you realise that you are a human too?

The planet has been through many stages - including being little more than a hot boiled rock........they even think places like Mars or Venus may have been possible candidates for life in some bygone trillennia.

however the planet may exist, but it won't return to some blue paradise floating through space....it my be just like Venus or Mars a lifeless rock floating round the sun

The problem is we need to realise that although man has touched every part of the planet, we still need those eco-systems to get by just for a relatively short time - for the next few centuries.

This is possible if we understand how these things work. When you kill a "keystone" species or an apex predator, you are not just endangering that animal and it's fellow species, you are damaging the whole eco-system. We rely on this for things such as weather, water, oxygen. Until these stupid idiots who think that animal parts will give them health/sex/power are educated otherwise they will continue to exploit poorer countries like Kenya that are rich in primary sources.

I don't know what you are rambling about but species are constantly becoming extinct just as all early humans have died off. We are only the most recent version. There is nothing written in stone that says humans survival is guaranteed. In fact, I would bet you that after a few 100,000 human generations we would be recognized as unintelligent animals that once were. The Earth will cleanse itself even post nuclear holocaust as radioactivity breaks down over tens of thousands of years. The thermococcus gammatolerans, the roaches and the water bears will live and life will continue and take a new course. It is all the blink of an eye in terms of the lifespan of the Earth. Stop being so damned self important.

Fortunately not everyone is like you - many people are trying to make change for the better and succeeding. You have no sense of history or understanding how "nature" works. Do you really believe that at the end of the last Ice Age, humanity was responsible for the warming of the planet? And how many elephants, tigers, turtles, rhino etc were around then? Many species were wiped out as a result of the Ice Age and many did not survive the end of the Ice Age either. Evolution, my dumb pessimist, is at work. Nature gave us the Great Barrier Reef and nature will take it away. China is now starting to take steps to stop poisoning itself and the list goes on. "I don't know what you are rambling about" - I'll second that!

You are stating the obvious, then drifting into fantasy and finally, totally missing the point.........you don't understand the process of evolution or the effect that man is having on the planet....at least that much is clear from your post.

One of the main obstacles to stopping the illegal trade in endangered species is the profound ignorance of the public at large.

For instance if one was to take a straw pole of contributors to this thread, there are some posts showing a depth of misunderstanding of the issues that is quite breathtaking.....without at least a vague understanding of what is going on it is hard to see how the measures advocated will get the support they need from a public that simply doesn't know.

May I suggest to some posters here that before they express an "opinion", they should get up to speed on at least the theory of evolution, some basics of ecology and conservation. They might then be in a better position to understand why things like the trade in ivory are detrimental to ALL of us.

Man also contributes to the destruction of this planet without even realizing - take domestic (and now millions of feral) cats for example; their numbers have increased to such a huge extent that they are destroying entire species of lizard, bird, rodents etc. These are at the small end but still vital in the overall picture.

Humans are so full of their own self importance they choose to have creatures as 'pets' but they do not take the responsibility for those pets and allow them freedom to roam and fornicate. Dogs - left to their own means reproduce large litters and can form packs, becoming a menace to the society that created them.

Overall, human beings are their own worst enemy and are by far the most ignorant creature ever to wander this earth. The only creature who goes about purposefully destroying it's own habitat. Brilliant.

A month for DNA? Things have really gone down hill since Koh Tao. Last year were knocking out DNA test in about 6 hours.

Yea, as they must gather samples from the tusks and also from cadavers from Nigeria to compare with, it's not like they have an elephant DNA database.

If you have a sample and a suspect to compare too then it will be much quicker!

It is not like they need to match it to an individual elephant like in human crime where they want to match an individual to committing a crime, although that may be possible if they have DNA samples of poached elephants...

All that is really probably needed is the type. "West African elephant DNA", as opposed to Thai or Myanmar or Indian type elephant DNA.

Yes...but you have to extract the DNA and analyse it before you can do that....you seem to be linking it to some imagined shortcut in the process.

No short cut. Match the DNA from the nerve root canal of a recovered tusk to a known African elephant type. African elephants will have different DNA type from Asian elephants. Or try and match that DNA to DNA sample from a poached elephant in some other country. The first is much simpler than the second by a magnitude of, well, lots & lots.

Are you suggesting that the current plethora of extinctions are not man made? If so then you too "have no sense of history or understanding how "nature" works."

Over 99% of all species that ever existed on earth are already extinct. Yes, quite a lot of those have gone in the last 40,000 years.

Posted

This planet has already suffered thru five or six mass extinction events, and nothing we humans do will prevent another such event.

With an estimated 99.9% of all species lost during the time span of the planet, what is demonstrated is that life will return... Maybe not in the way we see it, and maybe not including humans anyway

So don't worry, the sky isn't falling on your head, (not yet anyway.)

Possible cause of another extinction event do indeed include human activity..... But... It has also been put forward that aliens will be responsible for the next such event. (The leader of Scientology l. Ron Hubbard, even put this thought forward in one of his books, which was made into a movie starring John travolta )

It's a quandary.... To stop aliens, we need to advance significantly with our technology, which undoubtedly will result in the loss of more species

Don't get me wrong.... I do not support the killing of endangered species... I actually believe , in the main, that humans should consume items that they have grown or bred for consumption

Seeing large amounts of elephant tusks, makes us imagine large amounts of dead elephants, killed for those tusk, which is tragic... And poachers should be hunted down and exterminated.... And this indeed can be done thru DNA testing... That it might take a month, or a year, doesn't really matter in the bigger, hundreds of millions of years picture, wherein the planet has died and been reborn

Realistically, the loss of elephants wifi mean that there are less large pathways for other animals to use... Yep... That's about it... Luckily, knowing this, humans can take over that role with machinery

Loss of whales might increase the amount of fish in the ocean, which means more fish for humans

Apparently the loss of bees, is the most significant extinction that can happen, in a man made extinction event, as pollination will be reduced, and foods become less... But.... Humans, through technological advances can do a bees job, and already are, through GM foods and higher yields

So loosing a few species here and there, won't hurt to much, as we have seen this over the last few thousand years, where extinction levels have increase at a far far higher rate than is normal... Yep... Normal... And we are still here and thriving

So, I would suggest that extinction of certain species has a more emotional significance, than a practical one.

I believe that it is undeniable that humans need to continue to advance technologically, ( after all, we have aliens to fight) and this will continue to cause the loss ( extinction) of more species, but as long as research can tell us the impact of that event, humans will continue to survive.... And for humans, life is all about survival.

That said..., we do need to be proactive in reducing the rate of extinction events, hence my comment about killing the poachers, just like they did a few hundred years ago, if a commoner was caught fishing in a noblemans stream, or hunting in a noblemans forest, he would be executed or maimed ( eyes gouged out was a favorite)

Anyway... It would seem that as humans, we should support scientists with financial donations, and kick green peace to the. Kerb.

Just so that you will know in future. Australia has very strict rules and regulations concerning the Gt Barrier Reef. They are not destroying it, but putting millions of $ into its preservation. Yes things were done in the past before the ecology of the reef was fully understood.

Trentham, if you have proof of anyone destroying the reef then report it to the Reef presveration society. Otherwise please stop

You have to get the DNA from th elephnt;s tusk....it is the same whether or not you are checking for species or individual...you still need to extract the DNA!

Actually I think that is the crux of your misunderstanding of "evolution" and life on earth - you don't actually appreciate the relative time scales of the various extinctions or the probable causes.....if you ask for a definition of "current" it indicates to me you no longer have a real argument but just want to enter a bout of semantics and gainsaying.....no chance.

Your just not intelligent. It's ok, a lot of people have that problem. If you think the terrain of Earth can suddenly resemble that of Mars and Venus because of anything a human being can do to it you are in serious need of an education. Evolution and regeneration were the obvious point of my post. Claiming I don't know "how it works" is just ignorant of what I asserted. I made no reference to fantasy, that's your own departure from reality and finally your point was intentionally missed as it is entirely invalid. Try to focus. You have a penchant for wildly speculative claims. Don't expect to get away with asserting nonsense in a public forum child.

"Your just not intelligent" - well there's an interesting mistake....I would have thought anyone trying to make a comment like that would have checked the grammar before posting?

Next: - " the terrain of Earth" - really? - I think you had better look up the meaning of terrain.

While you are at it look up

  • evolution
  • regeneration
  • analogy
  • child.

Shouldn't be a problem for someone as "intelligent" as your post indicates

Most of your response seems to back up my initial conclusions

PS - if you finally get to understand any of this discussion, please feel free to put an argument forward against anything I have written..... something you presently seem unable to do.
