Khmer Times / Ven Rathavong

Two fishermen were killed by their own homemade bomb on Monday after they tried to use explosives to catch saltwater fish on islands near Preah Sihanouk province. Police arrested another fisherman who was found transporting and assisting the pair. Major General Chuon Narin, provincial police chief, said the two men, Nam Chhay Luon and Kol Khom, were part of a group of illegal fishermen who were known to use homemade bombs to catch fish.

“When they see the tail of the fish, they use this kind of bomb, and they get many tons of fish,” he said, adding that this time, they were killed because of a technical error with the bomb. The fishermen died of head injuries at the scene of the explosion. They were fishing near the islands of Koh Pring and Koh Trongol, both of which are about 64 kilometers away from the beaches of Preah Sihanouk province.
