Dogs through Immigration at Swampy

Featured Replies

Making the move on March 23rd with the wife and two dogs, looking forward to starting the second half of my life with a new home in Sam Roi Yod.

Reno to Seattle on Alaska Air then Korean Air to Bangkok. Got everything that far figured out with the dogs. Where I get a little sketchy is what happens in Bangkok. I will have all the necessary paperwork ( 20 copies of everything just in case) shot records , letters of health even a letter from the Vet stating that in his opinion quarantine is not necessary or can be performed i safely in primary residence (someone suggested that, figured can't hurt).

Would love it if someone who went through the process could fill me in. My plane lands at 23:00 hours so it's a awkward time (I guess).

Looking forward to your input, thanks in advance!

Hey Dennis. Make sure your vet is a certified FDA Vet. This is very important and required. I went through Taiwan not Korea and Taiwan had to have a transit permit even though I didnt see the dog. It was easy to get online. I dont know about Korea. But am sure about the FDA certified vet......

I reiterate the above post. I brought my Labrador about a year ago. I travelled through Hong Kong. I was warned ahead of time that it was very important to have a kennel in which the dog while standing had about 2 inches clearance. Otherwise he gets sent back! Needed to have a very large kennel. I got to BKK late on a Friday night and had no idea where to get my dog. So stayed the night in BKK and the next morning started poking around the airport. I flew Cathay Pacific so as it turned out they used a different freight company at BKK. My Thai girl friend got to talking to a Royal Thai Police security guy. He had someone make a call to a guy that works there as a veterinarian. He came down and while we waited he tracked down the dog and took care of everything. We signed some papers and gave him about 10,000 baht to get it done. If I had been on my own I'm not sure how it would have been worked out. I think that while in the US talking to Cathay Pacific freight people they may have tried to tell me about where to go to get the dog upon arrival. But at the time I was on information overload and stressed and figured I'd just handle it when I got there.

Overall my take on the whole process is you have to be very careful and think through the whole process. No one with the airline would spell out what you needed to do so if you didn't ask all the right questions you'll end up making a mistake.

For example as it turned out I couldn't fly out of Portland to Vancouver BC because the dog kennel was too large to fit into the small plane I had booked. Ended up renting a vehicle to drive to BC and that was of course suspicious to the border police. Luckily I had cancelled my flight from Portland to BC otherwise I found out later that the airline would have cancelled my entire flight if I didn't show in Portland.

And because of the size of the kennel I had to rent a truck to drive him from BKK to Chiang Mai. The rental company hit me up for dog hair removal inside the vehicle.

All total I figure it cost me about $3000 to bring my dog with me. He's 75 lbs and if he'd been half the size probably would have cost half of that.

Below pic is the Royal Thai police. Guy holding the leash was in charge and the others his posse.

$3000 to bring yet another dog into Thailand - the Land of Mutts!
