War room set up to prevent poor quality rice sold to consumers

BANGKOK, 15 February 2016 (NNT) - The Public Warehouse Organization (PWO) has set up a 'war room' to monitor the release of government rice to prevent poor quality rice from reaching consumers.

Pol Maj Gen Kraiboon Suadsong, Chairman of the state-owned Public Warehouse Organisation (PWO), revealed that a private bidder has purchased more than 20,000 tons of rice from government stockpiles. The rice is currently being transferred to manufacturers.

The war room will monitor every detail of the transport of rice. Surveillance cameras have been installed in various places to record how the rice is being transported from one place to another. The PWO Chairman added that the transportation of rice must only be carried out during daytime. He has also assured the transparency of the process and that this poor quality rice will never be sold to consumers.

The remaining 16,000 tons of substandard rice will be auctioned off again, as the previous winning bidder, Sinchaisri Co. Ltd., failed to sign a purchasing contract during the first round of bidding last year. The company will not be allowed to participate in the bidding process, due to its regulatory infraction.

Oh give me a break, once a buyer's truck pulls away from the govt warehouse with all its security cameras the govt won't know for sure where that rice is delivered to nor it's "actual" end use. To do that the govt would have to track the entire transport, storage, and use phases. Not going to happen...the govt will basically be relying on the sale contract which states what the rice can be used for and the honestly of the buyer.

Sure, whoever buys it may say the purpose is for pig food or make fertilizer just for example, but it I fully expect some unscrupulous buyers will actually resell it for purposes such as human consumption or just whatever use gives them the most profit. TIT

Dye the rice purple. Then Thailand would start selling home grown blueberries...

And I am sure they will be very well compensated for their effort...

The irony is never lost on me regarding the endless committees and official sounding investigative organisations that are set up by government in response to corruption and scandals. Said committees will then observe, talk about action and sit in ivory towers. More baht used by the govt coffers and taxpayer, but does it really yield any positive change or solve any problems?!

Will soldiers get a new medal for participating in this war room rice brigade?

I can just see the war room now. A small room with a TV tuned to a SOAP show and a bunch of female clerks being paid 300 baht a day filling out a ton of forms related to the rice sell while trying to watch the SOAP show.

All I needed was the headline to know we should be avoiding Thai rice for the foreseeable future. These people could not organize and monitor anything important.

How many "war rooms" are they going to set up??? They've already set up such a room for LM monitoring of the internet. How about a "war room" to track police corruption?

If they were smart they would not let the stored rice leave the country. Export only new rice.

Less chance of damaging the international Thai rice brand. Use the stored rice in Thailand

at the level it qualifies for. Human consumption, animal feed, alcohol production, or burn it.

If you allow it to be exported someone will try to pass of substandard rice as high quality

Thai rice. (and they will probably be Thai)

Some generals are going to get actual active duty then. Should award them a medal.

I would worry that the War Room cafeteria will serve some of that rice for lunch.
